Do people even understand how important it is to have Fei say this? How it's the way it implies that her entire being, her existence IS natural. If nature created it, it can't be against nature, be it yao or people.
Okay my usual yap post-episode bc Wu has me feeling so many ways.
First thing, one of my favourite things about the show is with each episode we see more layers of what’s known revealed to us. The characters fears and beliefs, and what drives them, what makes them cower, what makes them fight. I love knowing a character already, but having more and more details fed to us with each episode to draw us in deeper.
When they’re in the fog and Niran is trapped inside the room of mirrors again, we are once again faced with Niran’s worst enemy/fear.
And what is it that’s Niran’s worst enemy? Himself? His actions? His choices? Being faced with every version of himself and still being dissatisfied. Still being AFRIAD.
Is it his fear of his grandfathers rejection of him? Is it Niran’s own rejection of himself? What he’s built himself into?
To be confined with himself and only himself for all eternity, to face what he sees as his own failure and all those he’s let down?
There’s something incredibly engaging about Niran’s character and how he views himself. He’s a deeply layered character who’s incredibly closed off and emotionally drawn in. But even despite everything, he continues to fight for those around him in a selfless manner.
Old Niran who probably would have sacrificed himself, allowed himself to be sealed away, just accepted that as his fate, but now he has something binding him to this life.
Pete who won’t allow Niran to sacrifice himself for them, the same as how Niran wouldn’t allow Pete to.
The both of them teaching the other slowly that they have a place they belong, a home to come back to.
That the other will ALWAYS come looking, will always find them.
And before the ritual, Niran comforting Pete that just because he has a demon inside of him he isn’t a monster, he isn’t evil, and he IS able to control it. He asks Pete to consider it a blessing in some sense and not a curse.
Niran doesn’t want Pete to struggle with a disability for the rest of his life that he never learnt to live with, he wants him to feel strong, feel supported and feel like he CAN control it because he IS capable.
And it’s Niran’s belief and words that give Pete the ability and strength to get through the fog and fight against it.
Whether it’s the strength of the soul binding ritual, or merely the strength of having Niran believe in him.
And after, Pete’s utter heartbreak of believing he was lied to by the one person he’s trusted with his life. By the one person who he can look into the eyes of and knows if he’s telling the truth. You can see the utter devastation in it.
And Niran, willing to accept whatever pain Pete would inflict on him because the pain of Pete believing Niran would betray him hurts worse.
And to be honest, I’m not sure if it’s a decision he made before the ritual or during that moment of Pete’s grief and hurt, but I believe he made the choice, even subconsciously, before the ritual because of what Jia Hao says.
For me, it’s the fact that Niran releasing the demon upon the world again after sealing it because to him, Pete’s happiness and trust is more important.
He believes he can seal the demon again, so long as Pete has his sister back. So long as Pete believe in him.
Even if Niran knew there was a risk of having his life force severed, he still made that choice.
And Pete knows too how large the sacrifice Niran made by releasing the demon was. He was angry in the moment, scared he’d lost his sister, but after it all, he knows he can ALWAYS trust Niran and Pete will help him however he can to seal the demon again.
Pete is willing to risk his own life without hesitation to bring Niran back. There’s not even a second thought that he wouldn’t do that for him.
I truely adore the storytelling of this show, the emotions and how the relationship between Niran and Pete grows and forms and strengthens, not through just promises but actions. Not once have they left the other to stand alone.
