Shocked by this deadly incident - we extend our deepest condolences to our colleagues at UNOPS and the families of the staff killed in an explosion yesterday in a UN compound, located in a deconflicted area in Deir Al-Balah, central Gaza.

According to UNOPS, one staff was killed and 5 severely injured, after "an explosive ordnance was dropped or fired at the infrastructure and detonated inside the building".

Our teams treated some of the wounded at the MSF-supported Al-Aqsa Hospital.

Humanitarian workers and their operations must always be protected.

At least 377 aid workers have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 including 9 of our MSF colleagues. These deaths are unacceptable and must be independently investigated.

According to information gathered by our teams, on 3 December, in the West Bank, Palestine, Israeli forces raided and opened fire inside the Turkish hospital in Tubas, which we collaborate with, detaining staff, intimidating patients and causing damage to the emergency room.

During this hour-long raid, five medical staff were detained and one person was wounded. Medical staff on site were threatened at gunpoint and subjected to aggressive questioning. Patients were told to stay still or they would be shot and killed.

“This violent incursion is unacceptable and shocking,” says Karine Robert, MSF deputy head of mission for Palestine.

This is one of many attacks on healthcare in the West Bank in recent months. We call for the protection and respect of medical facilities, staff, and patients.

On 10 November, Israeli authorities blocked, without explanation, the medical evacuation of eight children and their caretakers from Gaza who are in need of medical care, including a two-year-old with leg amputations, to the MSF hospital in Jordan. We strongly denounce this decision.

“It's utterly shocking and outrageous that children who need essential treatment are being blocked by Israel from leaving Gaza. Israel’s denial of urgent medical evacuations defies reason and humanity,” says Moeen Mahmood, MSF country director in Jordan.

In recent months, MSF applied for 32 children and caretakers to be medically evacuated from Gaza to Jordan. Only 6 were allowed to leave. Lengthy procedures and unexplained denials block the provision of medical treatment for children who have been severely injured in Gaza.

The healthcare system in Gaza has been dismantled, meaning those in need of specialised medical care have nowhere to go. According to WHO, there are at least 14,000 people in need of medical evacuation. Over 43,000 people have been killed in Gaza and 100,000 injured since 7 October 2023.

MSF calls on the Israeli authorities to ensure medical evacuations for Palestinians in need of medical care, including their caregivers, while ensuring that all patients and their caregivers are guaranteed a safe, voluntary and dignified return to Gaza.

Thousands of people are trapped in Jabalia camp, north Gaza, as Israeli forces attack the area.

“Nobody is allowed to get in or out, anyone who tries is getting shot,” says Sarah Vuylsteke, MSF project coordinator. Five of our staff are trapped in the camp, fearing for their lives.

“We were staying at the Al-Yemen Al-Saeed Hospital, but they bombed it. About 20 people were killed. I don’t know what to do, at any moment we could die. People are starving. I am afraid to stay, and I am also afraid to leave,” says Haydar, MSF driver trapped in Jabalia camp.

Israeli forces issued evacuation orders on 7 October in Jabalia camp while carrying out attacks at the same time, preventing people from leaving the area safely. Forced evacuations of homes and bombing of neighbourhoods by the Israeli forces is turning north Gaza into uninhabitable ruins.

We call on the Israeli forces to halt forced displacements and to stop the all-out war on people in Gaza. Israeli forces must also ensure the protection of civilians and hospitals and allow desperately needed humanitarian supplies to enter the north as a matter of extreme urgency.

Na zware aanvallen in Khan Younis vanochtend, is volgens het Ministerie van Gezondheid het Nasser ziekenhuis in #Gaza opnieuw overspoeld met 100+ gewonden. Het ziekenhuis staat onder enorme druk omdat het doden en verwonden van mensen non-stop doorgaat in het zuiden van Gaza.

Collega Ahmad Abu Warda vertelt: “De situatie in het Nasser ziekenhuis is catastrofaal en de toestroom van patiënten is sinds de ochtend niet gestopt. Hele families komen binnen, dood of gewond. We moeten kiezen wie naar de operatiekamer gaat en wie we niet kunnen helpen.”

Het ziekenhuis heeft zijn volledige capaciteit bereikt: alle bedden zijn bezet en patiënten moeten vaak bedden delen. Onze teams melden dat het ziekenhuis mensen oproept om bloed te doneren, omdat de bloedvoorraad bijna op is.

“We zien elke twee minuten ambulances aankomen bij de spoedeisende hulp. Er zijn veel kinderen, vrouwen en veel ouderen, ook zagen we minstens één hulpverlener onder de gewonden.” vertelt onze noodcoördinator in Gaza.

Door deze toestroom van gewonde patiënten na bombardementen en aanvallen raken de medische voorraden die voor kraamzorg, trauma en brandwonden bestemd zijn op. Onze teams proberen aan de behoeften te voldoen, maar met onvoldoende voorraden en middelen in de chaos is het redden van levens uiterst moeilijk geworden.
