Laura Secor’s @TheAtlantic essay on the betrayal of the Iranian people:
“War has instead done what it usually does: empowered the powerful, rallied the faithful, and allowed an apparatus of repression to present its imperatives in terms of national security. Trump, of course, is as indifferent to the fate of Iran’s civilians as he is ignorant of their circumstances. But there is still one gesture he could make, in service not of the Iranian political opposition per se but of the forgotten cause of human decency, toward a population protected neither by its own regime nor by anyone else. The next time he shoots for the deal of the century, he could add to his list of pie-in-the-sky demands a few that would cost him and the Islamic Republic next to nothing: the release of those arbitrarily detained, an end to political executions, and a respectful burial for the dead.

When did the anxiety fade away at the Azteca?
It’s tough to say, but a week of worry in Mexico City gave way to a huge party that will last all weekend.

Here in Mexico City, protests, strikes and public unrest have understandably given some locals complicated feelings ahead of the opener tomorrow afternoon.

In Dallas, legendary muralist Wyland had a massive, 82-foot "whaling wall" painted over in favor of a planned piece of World Cup artwork.
FIFA says they had nothing to do with it, but Wyland isn't buying it. He's suing them for $25 million.

New wave of enforcement leaves Chicago street vendors fearful and struggling. This time, it’s local police, not ICE, causing concerns. An important story from @LAURA_N_ROD

“What the fuck are you doing?!” Trump lit into Netanyahu over the Lebanon bombing:
“You're fucking crazy. You'd be in prison if it weren't for me. I'm saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this."

Remarkable story from @propublica of how the Pentagon got a call from the White House and rushed to lend $620 million to an obscure company -- with links to Donald Trump Jr. The company's valuation rose 10-fold to $2 billion. https://t.co/yIJ9bXb9Jb
Breaking news: The Pentagon is moving to recruit hundreds of troops to appear as spectators at President Trump’s UFC cage-fighting event on the White House lawn, and requiring those who attend to pay their own way and meet height and weight requirements. https://t.co/zOSM2ac8Kk
SCOOP: Trump admin is paying millions to quickly cover four enormous bronze horses with extra-thick 23.75 karat gold leaf.
The money for the rush job is coming from National Park Service. In total, I found ~$100 mil spent on new DC beautification projects

Mystery customers. Missing permits. Inaccurate customs declarations. Probes in the US & Mexico. Reuters followed the paper trail linking a US fuel trader to a Mexican cartel. My story with @stefanieyaa, @SEisenhammer & @LAMarlaD for @specialreports#OOTT https://t.co/sT8ylRKT8f
DEEP DIVE: The Trump administration is escalating efforts to unmask anonymous online critics, sending grand jury subpoenas to social media companies for their information. A court fight has been playing out in sealed proceedings in DC.

Nearly 5,000 Cubans have been deported from the US to Mexico. Lorenzo Sánchez fled Cuba in 1980 as part of the Mariel boatlift and settled in South Florida. Recently, he tossed a beer can toward a garbage can, police saw him and it upended his life. https://t.co/S2Jj6g5Cya
