RT. HON. SPEAKER TAJUDEEN ABBAS AT 61: A STATESMAN, A BROTHER, A SOURCE OF PRIDE
On behalf of the Government and people of Kaduna State, I warmly felicitate with my dear brother, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, PhD, GCON, on his 61st birthday. Today, we celebrate a distinguished son of Kaduna whose life demonstrates how scholarship, humility and steadfast devotion to the people can elevate public service and strengthen the foundations of our democracy.
Mr. Speaker, you are a thoroughbred leader, a gentleman of uncommon grace and a grassroots politician whose connection with the people remains enduring. From Zaria Federal Constituency to communities across Kaduna State and beyond, your immense following rests on trust earned through accessibility, empathy and faithful representation. The affection you command reflects the consistency with which you have listened, served and upheld the dignity of those who entrusted you with their hopes.
As Iyan Zazzau, you carry a cherished heritage with distinction; as Speaker, you have embraced the larger responsibilities of national leadership with wisdom and integrity. You are a core nationalist whose commitment to Nigeria rises above sectional considerations. Your capacity to build consensus across political, ethnic and religious differences affirms a conviction we share: that our diversity must enrich our common purpose and that leadership must give every Nigerian a sense of belonging.
In my considered judgment, you are one of the finest Speakers to have presided over the House of Representatives since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999. Your calm authority, legislative experience and respect for colleagues have fostered stability, cooperation and purposeful deliberation. Through your stewardship, the House continues to demonstrate the value of disciplined leadership, institutional responsibility and legislation responsive to the aspirations of our citizens.
I particularly commend your outstanding commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. As one of its foremost champions, you have provided invaluable legislative support for reforms directed towards national renewal, economic opportunity and improved wellbeing. Your partnership in this endeavour reflects a clear understanding that the ultimate measure of governance is the difference it makes in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
For me, your birthday also honours a dear brother, trusted ally and generous team player. Our partnership in the onerous but joyful task of restoring Kaduna State’s glory and pride remains a source of encouragement. Together, we are working to renew Kaduna’s promise as the soul and capital of Northern Nigeria, strengthening unity, widening opportunity and ensuring that progress reaches our communities. I deeply cherish your counsel, solidarity and unwavering commitment to our people.
As you mark this milestone, I pray that Almighty Allah grants you sound health, enduring strength, greater wisdom and many more years of fruitful service to Kaduna State and Nigeria. May your home remain blessed, your endeavours prosper and your legacy of service continue to inspire generations.
Happy 61st birthday, Mr. Speaker, my dear brother. May the years ahead bring fulfilment and abundant grace.

Gotta feel for whoever is running against Uba Sani next year. It’s a done deal!
“IN KADUNA, CITIZENS COUNT THE GAINS OF UBA SANI’S FREE CNG BUSES”
By Usman Abubakar
Public policy acquires its truest meaning not in government documents, budget speeches or ceremonial unveilings, but in the burdens it removes from ordinary lives. In Kaduna State, that meaning can now be seen every morning as workers, students, teachers, traders, artisans and pensioners board gleaming Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses without reaching into their pockets.
For millions of citizens negotiating one of Nigeria’s most difficult economic periods, Gov. Uba Sani’s Free CNG Mass Transit Scheme has become more than a transportation programme. It is a moving social safety net, returning money to households, protecting livelihoods and demonstrating that government can bring both compassion and imagination to economic reform.
The removal of petrol subsidy by President Tinubu in 2023 was a difficult but necessary national decision intended to free the economy from an increasingly unsustainable fiscal burden. Yet its immediate consequences were severe. Higher fuel prices rapidly translated into increased transportation costs, while the prices of food, education, healthcare and other essentials rose simultaneously.
Workers discovered that commuting consumed an alarming share of their salaries. Students struggled to reach their schools. Traders watched transport costs erode already narrow margins, while artisans, retirees and low-income families bore the harshest edge of the adjustment.
President Tinubu consistently urged state governments to complement federal reforms with practical measures capable of cushioning their effects on citizens. In Kaduna, Gov. Uba Sani responded with uncommon decisiveness. On July 7, 2025, he launched a fleet of 100 brand-new CNG-powered buses and made transportation entirely free.
What began primarily as an intervention for workers and students was soon expanded to embrace every citizen because, as the administration correctly recognised, economic hardship does not respect professional, social or occupational boundaries.
Twelve months later, more than five million passenger journeys had been recorded, with approximately ₦5.24billion saved by commuters. These figures are impressive, but their deeper significance lies beyond arithmetic. That money did not disappear into an abstract economic ledger; it remained in the pockets of families. It became food on tables, schoolbooks in children’s hands, medicine for the sick, rent contributions, business capital and modest savings against unforeseen emergencies. In an era when every Naira matters, the scheme has redistributed relief directly and transparently, one journey at a time.
Comrade Ayuba Magaji, Chairman of the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), captures the intervention’s effect on workers with striking clarity. “The Free Transport Scheme is simply marvellous,” he says. A state employee travelling from Maraban Rido to the Kaduna State Secretariat would ordinarily spend at least ₦1,000 on a single journey. With the CNG buses, that worker travels to and from work without paying a fare. “That transportation money will now be saved to meet other needs,” he explains, adding that some junior workers save as much as half of their salaries through the scheme. His conclusion is unambiguous: “We cannot thank Gov. Uba Sani enough.”
That testimony reveals why the programme is considerably more consequential than a conventional transport subsidy. A subsidised fare merely reduces expenditure; a free service removes it. For a junior worker earning a modest salary, the difference can determine whether the household survives the month in relative stability or descends into debt.

On this blessed day, may Allah shower us with His endless mercy, ease every hardship we face, and fill our hearts with peace and contentment. May He grant healing to the sick, answer our sincere prayers, forgive our shortcomings, and bless our loved ones who have passed away with the highest place in Jannah. May we always remain among those who remember Him, place our trust in Him, and are embraced by His infinite compassion. Ameen

I deeply appreciate His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for recognising Kaduna State’s FREE CNG Mass Transit Programme as an example of the impactful interventions needed at the subnational level. This recognition affirms our commitment to designing policies that directly improve the lives of our people.
Kaduna State remains the only state in Nigeria providing FREE CNG mass transit to its citizens. In its first year, the scheme recorded about 3.2 million passenger trips, saving commuters over ₦3.5 billion. These savings represent real relief for workers, students, traders, families and other residents, helping households retain more of their hard-earned income. Our commitment is to sustain people-centred governance by reducing the burden on vulnerable households, expanding access to essential services and creating opportunities for citizens to thrive.
We remain grateful to Mr. President for the continued support to subnational governments and the efforts to create an enabling environment for states to translate national policies into practical interventions that deliver meaningful benefits to our people.

“GANI AND SANI” - A Daughter Remembers
By Sam Omatseye
That is the picture in the book, Gani Fawehinmiand Uba Sani: A tale of Mentor and Mentee. It is written by Basirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, the daughter of the pugilist for human rights and justice, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
It is a book that draws on memory, relishes a father’s example and ruminates over a young man he took under his arm. This is a book that has touched on an important element of leadership. That is, the power of mentorship.
This mentor was a sheltered boy before his father died. Gani could not preen in luxury, even if he wanted to. He had been pruned. He now worked as a petrol attendant among other odd jobs in order to scale through school. He learned a lesson in reality. Adversity chiselled him to learn empathy for the poor. Once he graduated, he knew he was not going to be a lawyer who strode to court so the world could courtesy to his class. The court became a battlefield. Students would later garland him with a unique and defiant title: senior advocate of the masses.
The legal establishment could bask in their Olympian Senior Advocate of Nigeria, although they would not begrudge him that honour for too long. He clutched it before an illness ambushed him to death.
The mentee comes from an impoverished environment. The mentor, a Yoruba and Southerner from the Southwest. The mentee, a Fulani, a northerner from the Northwest. To parody poet Rudyard Kipling, north was not just north. It met with the south. They met in two men. It was not just north that met south, not just Fulani that met Yoruba. It was a coincidence of nationalist sentiment. Both men were fighters. One was an older lion used to growling and duelling and crunching preys. The other was a young cat eager for the hunt. Both were at one in one thing: the nation’s leadership was not only astray. It was diabolical. What brought them together was an ominous hour of our history.
Fawehinmi-Biobaku relates that the meeting of both mentor and mentee happened in the tempest of the June 12 struggle. “I found in Chief Gani Fawehinmi not just a comrade but a mentor who treated me with the warmth of a father and the wisdom of a seasoned general,” reflected Sani in the book.
They were fighting against a time of tyranny. The dictator, first Ibrahim Babangida & later Sani Abacha, were exhibiting the vegetative stress of despots who would not exit the throne. A stress that meant, as the author puts it, “security agencies intensified their efforts against pro-democratic activists, particularly those capable of mobilising resistance beyond the Southwest. Uba Sani became a marked man. His movements were monitored. His activities were scrutinised. Harassment became routine. Arrest was no longer a possibility but an expectation.” The now governor of Kaduna State was picked up at night and whisked in his underwear into an unknown vehicle to an unknown place by unknown men – my words.
That story is a familiar Gani chronicle. Mentor transmitted heroic adversity to mentee. The struggle visited the pain of the father upon the son.
Gani saw Sani along with others in the brood of angry young men against the military. Sani stood out for his dynamic energy. He belonged to that cream of northerners who believed, like Karl Marx & a few other philosophers of the 19th century like Kant and Hegel, that consciousness precedes being. It is not you who makes your identity but the world you live in. Like philosopher Martin Buber, the I – that is the self – must make sense in the context of thou – that is, the world. The thou is the suffering, the inequality, the injustice. Empathy conquers tribe or region. Empathy empowers the human cooperative spirit. So, Sani frustrated the divisive rhetoric of Abacha and IBB men who wanted to turn the resistance into a tribal matter. Sani had lived in north and south, schooled in the Kaduna Polytechnic but had his degrees in Calabar and later in Abuja.
