One of the main ways misogyny and patriarchy dominate us all is that we’re raised to believe men have intrinsic value as living humans but women have value only or mainly via relationships to others.

This is why the #WorldCup2023 commentators (even the women) repeatedly describe Aussie players in terms of their status or non-status as mothers.

It’s an insidious and at least partly unconscious feature of how all women in the public eye are described: via marital/partner status or via whether they’ve given birth. It’s so ingrained we even officially label most women (but not men) using Miss or Mrs.

Message to all media reporting on women’s sport: NOTICE YOU’RE DOING IT AND FUCKING STOP IT.
