365 days ago I had a mental breakdown, well, sorts of. Not a real breakdown but a slightly progressing mental instability leading to suicidal thoughts and the like. The reason I can talk about it today is that I had a lot of opportunities at hand.

Congrats to the GraalVM team on their 1.0 release. I look forward to leveraging the Graal JIT in OpenJDK as well compiling entire Ruby apps to native code using JRuby. I also look forward to this technology moving into OpenJDK as an open, unencumbered standard we can trust.

After 2 months in Thailand and China I arrived in LA yesterday. I'm going to cross the continent on my bicycle over the next three months. Immigration officer asked "if you're an IT consultant how come you've got 3 months off?"

The older I get, the less patience I have for "senior" engineers who

* Don't see any problem with legacy C++ or untyped languages
* Refuse to learn a new PL unless it's 95%+ like what they learned in college
* Consider OO/imperative the only paradigm of use or value.
