I'm a historian of Palestine.

This post on the 1948 Palestine War is not history, it's propaganda replete with distortions & lies. Let's go through them one by one:

Myth #1: The Zionists "accepted the partition plan." This is false. The Zionist leadership in Palestine rejected the plan:

While the Jews of Palestine celebrated in public, Zionist leaders rejected the partition plan in private. Ben Gurion said as much in his diary: “Such a demographic balance [proposed by the plan in which the Jewish state would be only 55% Jewish] questions our ability to maintain Jewish sovereignty,” David Ben-Gurion argued in early December. “Only a state with at least 80% Jews is a viable and stable state,” he said. (Ilan Pappe, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, 48). In other words, the Zionist leadership rejected the plan because it put too many Palestinians in the Jewish state.

The Zionist leadership was not just unsatisfied with the demographic balance, but also the borders. That’s why, from the earliest weeks of fighting, Jewish militias attacked & depopulated Palestinian neighborhoods, villages and cities in areas allocated to the Arab State, including Jaffa, Acre, the Western and Lower Galilee, the Jerusalem Corridor, the Judean Hills, the Latrun area and Jerusalem itself, designated as an international zone.

As Ben-Gurion put it in his diary in early December, “no such thing in history as a final arrangement— not with regard to the regime, not with regard to borders, and not with regard to international agreements,” a view he had been expressing for more than a decade (Simha Flapan the Birth of Israel, p.13, 23-4) For the Zionist leadership, the borders proposed by the UN were not effectively irrelevant.

Myth #2: "the Arab side started the war." This is false.

Today, every Israel apologist will tell you “the Arabs” fired the first shot of the 1948 War, but that’s not how the violence was interpreted by the Zionist leadership at the time, nor is what historians believe today.

On November 20, 1947 a week before the Partition plan announcement, the Lehi gang, unprovoked, raided a house near Ra‘anana belonging to the Abu Kishk bedouin tribe & executed 5 men from the Shubaki family.

Seif al-Din Abu Kishk carried out a revenge attack for the 20 November attack on November 30, the day after the announcement of the plan, ambushing a Jewish bus in the Coastal Plain near Kfar Syrkin, killing 5, and then carrying out another attack on a bus, southbound from Hadera, killing two more (Morris, 1948: A History, p.76).

This is the incident that Zionists today love to point to -- yet it had nothing to do with the 1948 War, indeed, it was unrelated to it, as the Zionist history Benny Morris himself admits.

The organized Palestinian Arab response to the plan was not one of violence, but civil disobedience, a three-day general strike launched by the Arab Higher Committee, the closest thing to a political body representing the Palestinians. (Morris, 1948: A History, p.76).

This came amidst sporadic mob attacks, shootings and gradually expanding clashes (ibid, 77-8) in which Arab fighters attacked Jewish supply lines, Jewish fighters attacked Palestinian neighborhoods, towns and villages.

Myth #3: "The [Arab] goal was that there would be no Jewish state":

The most capable Arab fighting force was the Jordanian army and they signed a mutual non-aggression pact with the Zionist movement before May 15, 1948. In fact, they recognized the Jewish State before it even came into existence. [Avi Shlaim, Collusion across the Jordan]

Another one of the Arab militias in Palestine led by Fawzi al-Qawuqji began seeking a truce with the Zionists in January 1948, and continued through February and March 1948. He tried to negotiate directly with the Zionist leadership. He offered a non-aggression pact that would keep the Jewish forces within the designated Jewish state. His proposals, needless to say, were rejected. (Pappe, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, p.116).

The opposite of what you said is correct. It was the Jewish goal that there would be no Arab state in Palestine.

Myth #4: "Israel was the underdog." [Or, as this writer puts it: "Israel had no real army and barely any weapons, and many of its soldiers were Holocaust survivors who had come ashore only months earlier. They won because the alternative was to die."

Israel had a military advantage over both the native Palestinian Arabs and the invading Arab armies. This is the unanimous consensus of every historian of the 1948. All of them. Cite me a historian who has written about the 1948, and I'll show you someone who agrees the Jewish forces had a clear military advantage.

As per the holocaust survivors, indeed, the Zionist movement sent Hagannah officials into the Displaced Persons camps in Europe to transform refugees into ethnic cleansers, and, beginning in Nov. 1947, the Zionists imposed a conscription on all holocaust surviving men aged 18-35 in the camps. They were conscripted against their will and forced to serve in the army of a country that didn't exist yet. Many of them did not want to fight. Myth #5: "Some were told by their own leaders to leave their villages until the Arab armies had won." This is pure fiction.

100% of the 750,000 Palestinian Arabs who became refugees during the 1948 were forcibly expelled by Israel. That's because none of them were allowed to return to their homes after the war. if a country denies you the right to go to your home -- this is what we call in the english language, forcible expulsion.

Myth #6: "The roughly 160,000 Arabs who stayed in Israel became Israeli citizens."

Actually, some 30,000-40,000 were expelled from Israel between 1949-1959 and the rest were subject to belligerent Israeli military occupation. 40-60% of the properties of these Palestinians who eventually became Israeli citizens was confiscated. They needed to apply to the army to receive a permit to leave their village.
