In U.S. soccer, we need to spend less time thinking we’ve acquired all the knowledge we need and more time collaborating to improve our ideas and references in all domains related to the game. https://t.co/HglW4GsvzD via @SimpliFaster
@MartinRafelt@TimLees10@TPiMBW I’m curious as well. Recently rewatched this Mahrez goal and wondered if anyone had quantified # of movements prior to receiving.
Makes sense anecdotally but would be useful to know hard numbers, similar to what’s out there on scanning.
Short vid I made for players we work with, focusing on Details of Ball Protection & Shielding
- Bend to absorb
- Lock out to separate
- Hands/arms to control
- Knees and butt to block
- Change speed/direction to spin away
Giving supporting options to the teammate you passed to and staying connected to your teammates so you can help regain possession if it is lost (rest defense).
⚪️ Pass and Move ⚫️
Players that have good movement after they pass stand out. The type of movement you make will depend on the situation you're in. Here are a few key ideas for why to move after you pass and videos showing "how" other players are doing it.
Proactive attacking- It is much harder to defend a moving target than a stationary one. You put yourself in positions for 2 and 3 man combinations. You can drag/pin defenders, freeing space for your receiving teammate. This also increases the tempo of play.
Training Idea adapted for our context and based on the Nagelsmann exercise shared by @albinsheqiri
8v8+3 in extremely narrow space. The playing field is cut into 6 zones. The two yellow lines serve as offsides.

Interesting Vertical Focus Game in #Hoffenheim
9v9 + 4 - Super Small ”Vertical” Pitch
(2 touch restriction)
• Progression
• Orientation for forward play
• Combinational Play
• Verticality
• 3rd man combos > follow up of play
• Counter pressing
Our players had a lot of success/ fun w it and many other ideas presented themselves. The session is easily adaptable to encourage different desirable actions that we’ll try in the future. Here are a few examples from the session.
I’ve been working with @spikesonly for 10+ years and still learn something new every time we get together!
Excited to share new insights from today on physical prep/performance in soccer with our ProProject players, coaches, and families.
Interview. We watch World Cup Golden Boot winner @GaryLineker on MOTD every week, but we never get his analysis of goals. So I got him to talk me through some of HIS goals, and he provided the best explanation I've heard of how to be a prolific striker.
