Michal Meyer

Happily sitting at the intersection of science, history & culture

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@philipcball Exactly, if you cannot learn from your mistakes how can you improve on past performances.

[Science History Institute @SciHistoryOrg]

How did the peer-review process and scientific method become part of how we do science? Well, you can thank alchemy for that. #Distillations has more on this story below ⬇⬇

[Maiken Scott @MaikenScott]

That is the best thing I have seen all week! Voted for you!! https://t.co/nRcIuTDlRE

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@bhgross144 @ChemHeritage I will check it out. Thanks for passing along.

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@AliceDreger This hits home, clarifies for me where individuals can meaningfully contribute.

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

this hits the nail on the head https://t.co/3JdKklgWhh

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@bhgross144 Thanks for the shout out! How are things going with you.

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@Enceladosaurus what's your preference? I'm not part of LadyScience but I'm curious--what would be catchy, informative, and non-denigrating

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@ChemHeritage In some ways women had an easier time participating when science was mostly an amateur pursuit. #ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@ChemHeritage The subtext, of course, was that men had to support a family--the nuclear family with male as breadwinner. #ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@AnnaNReser @ChemHeritage Yes, which then affects status and pay of that field. #ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@Enceladosaurus It's the name of the collaboration. https://t.co/KKUYmAgKY8

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@CrimsonAlkemist Just had a look at that thread. Depressing to read in 2017. Haven't faced this stuff since I was a physics undergrad.

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@CrimsonAlkemist @ChemHeritage Agreed. I focus on the past, but still an issue today.#ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@christineegriff @ChemHeritage But if no one in the next generation points to what was done, that's when the forgetting begins.#ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@christineegriff @ChemHeritage Suspect the burying was often not deliberate. Somerville got support from male friends in her network.

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@ChemHeritage By focusing on 1sts easy to ignore amount of scientific work by women. See a few big trees and miss the landscape.#ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@ChemHeritage Miss many interesting women (and their work) by focusing on firsts & end up with 2 dimensional view of science #ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

Women have always participated in science but in the past a lot of their work was hidden. #ladyscience

[Michal Meyer @michalme]

@GordinMichael I think that is an important point, one undergraduate history of science courses should be better at addressing.
