I rarely give advice, but seriously, college is a scam. I offer an alternative.
This is a hardcore strategy for anyone age 18 or older to dramatically change the direction of or advance their career.
This could be the greatest investment of your life, but you have to be serious. Way more serious than your average person, so this isn’t for everyone.
Save at least $20,000-$30,000. Work 2 jobs for a year if you must. Get the money. Apply for a passport, then spend the next 3 years abroad in a less expensive country to study.
Many don’t know this, but you can rent a comfortable studio in a city with access to modern facilities (cafes, gyms, malls, etc) for only $200/month, and maybe on $700/month realistically in total expenses depending on your needs. This is more than enough.
36 months X $700 = ~$25,000
Add another $5,000 for flights and emergencies for a total of $30k
Do border runs (look it up) by land or air between 2-3 countries every 60-90 days to avoid overstaying your visas. A student visa may be possible.
Live in boring area with very few local attractions like beaches, and absolutely zero nightlife, so you won’t be tempted to go out or take days off. This is the core principle behind the insane productivity in Silicon Valley, a cultural dead place that is able to extract so much productivity out of its tech worker citizens that its products like the iPhone are what keeps the U.S. dollar from collapsing because you need US dollars to buy one (but that’s a different story).
Immerse yourself in self study online and your chosen craft. I’m assuming you already know what this skill is, or this post is not for you because you lack seriousness.
During these 3 years, follow the right accounts on X. These are your professors.
Follow @elonmusk (professor X) especially, his posts will keep you up to date with global trends and the problems that the world needs solving. You may solve these problems someday. You don’t need to align with someone politically to learn a thing or two from them.
Read as many books recommended by @naval as you can. He’s one of the clearest, most unbiased thinkers in the world. He’s also connected to so many other great thinkers from his interviews and book recommendations. Plug yourself into this community of empowering thinkers who will set you free on multiple levels.
Use AI chatbots like Grok and Claude religiously to save time on your studies. If you’re studying a subject and not using an AI chatbot all throughout the day to synthesize, question, or kill your ideas and beliefs, you’re missing out on some deep insights.
These 3 years are going to be some of most hardcore years of your life, at least in a monastic sense. While your friends are partying and getting into debt, you’ll be studying the sword. You’ll have 1000 days of study and practice to race to the top 1% in global talent for your skill at your experience level in years.
After 3 years, fly back your home country and start applying for jobs. Keep switching jobs until you can find a place where you can continue to grow your skills, because not all skills can been learned outside of an organization. If you’re an engineer, try to get a job at one of Elon’s companies. Get that equity and HODL the f*ck out of it.
Speaking of equity, don’t forget to learn about basic finance and investments so you can start investing when you are young. Get a Roth IRA to compound your investments tax free.
If you do this, you’ll be on your way to financial independence, which is THE goal.

Some people are meant to succeed. The Universe will postpone their celebration. But they simply never give up. Eventually, life finally aligns for them, and it will seem like it happened overnight. But there were many dark nights. They just always knew they were inevitable.
