That moment is genuinely one of the most iconic moments of this World Cup.

The score was 1-1 between Argentina and England in the 90th minute. Messi had already done everything—he had created the equalizer and looked completely exhausted. At that point, everyone was thinking, “Fine, we’ll settle this in extra time.”

Then Alexis Mac Allister struck the crossbar and put his hands on his head in frustration, while Djed Spence was about to launch a counterattack.

Out of nowhere, Messi exploded into a full sprint and pressed Spence so aggressively that he was forced to clear the ball aimlessly.

Messi won it back, dribbled past O’Riley and Spence, and delivered the winning assist to Lautaro Martínez.

When the final whistle blew, he dropped to his knees and celebrated with pure emotion—as if he had just reached his first World Cup final.

This came after a historic performance in which Messi covered 8.3 km, the greatest distance he has ever covered in a single World Cup game.

Just think about it.

A player who has already won everything in football, lifted the World Cup, played in 2 World Cup finals, and is almost 40 years old… yet still has the passion to carry his country on his shoulders and drag them to victory.

Of course, you’re probably wondering why Enzo Fernández celebrated his goal against England with the same celebration Messi used to do. Here’s the story.

Back in 2016, after Argentina lost the Copa América final to Chile, Messi broke down in tears and announced his retirement from international football. At the time, Enzo Fernández was just a 15-year-old teenager who idolized Messi and dreamed of one day playing alongside him for Argentina.

Enzo wrote an emotional letter to Messi, begging him to reconsider his decision. In that letter, he defended Messi when so many people were criticizing him and condemned those attacking him. He ended it with these unforgettable words:

“Keep playing and enjoy yourself, Messi, because you have no idea how much joy you bring us.”

Time passed.

Messi reversed his retirement decision.

Enzo grew up, fulfilled his dream of playing alongside his idol, helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, and got another chance to share one more World Cup with Messi.

He scored the winner against Egypt, and today he scored Argentina’s equalizer against England—from a Messi assist—and celebrated it with Messi’s iconic celebration. After Argentina reached a 2nd consecutive World Cup final, his teammates lifted Messi onto their shoulders.

Years ago, Enzo was one of Messi’s first defenders when the whole country seemed to be turning against him.

Today, he has become one of Messi’s biggest supporters on the pitch in what could be the final World Cup of his career.
