We got invited to put some thoughts about the use of multiomics to uncover microbial-host interactions in the lung.

How different fields handle batch effects
RNAseq : batch effects is an outstanding program for the last 20 years, we use fancy stats/ML to fix it.
Microbiome : batch effects is a thing, but we kinda ignore it, because it's too hard.
Metabolomics : what are batch effects?
Happy Definition Monday! “Confounder” is an overused term in microbial ecology & next-gen sequencing, often used to mean “something that makes science difficult”. Here’s what it actually means ⬇️ — thanks for the great reminder, @davidandacat! 🙌🏻💯
Researchers @nyuniversity found people with advanced-stage lung cancer had a greater enrichment of oral microbes in their lungs than people with early-stage, suggesting lung microbiomes could contain biomarkers for predicting lung cancer prognosis …

Another huge effort for the Lab: Lower airway dysbiosis affects lung cancer progression
Amazing effort from James Tsay, @amgodogma and @benjaminwumd from my lab
Great collaborations with @RichBonneauNYU @jamietmorton@ThalesPapaG@michellebadri

presenting DeepBlast by @jamietmorton and company. We integrate end-to-end diff dynamic programing and sequence-ML-models to improve sensitivity and alignment for distant homologs. @FlatironCCB @NYUDataScience

I put together a six-week seminar series on microbial 'omics. The purpose here is to clarify key concepts in simple, digestible terms with no practical discussions.

When I won in 2018, many dismissed our victory as a “fluke.”
Our win was treated as an aberration, or bc my opponent “didn’t try.”
So from the start, tonight’s race was important to me.
Tonight we are proving that the people’s movement in NY isn’t an accident. It‘s a mandate.
Trump is cracking jokes in Tulsa about Covid-19, calling it "kung flu" which is not only racist but belittles the deaths of 122K Americans and the horrific loss for their families.
Happy #JuneteenthDay, as a data scientist, I have a responsibility to critically evaluate study design, cross-validate, and test algorithms for racial bias and to provide open-source transparent, reproducible code/methods #rstats want #EqualityForAll.
We (@FlatironCCB ) have open positions for computational people that want to wait an extra year before hitting job market (due to shutdown). Topics = stats aimed at genomics, deep learning on proteins and protein-drug interactions, and comp microbiome. reach out via DM
An important update on new coronavirus-related measures: For NYU in NYC, from 3/11-13, classes will move to remote instruction, and will continue that way for 3/23-27 (after spring break). https://t.co/b6ybuwniel
