You purchase an iPhone in Makumbusho using Tanzanian Shillings (TZS).

The shopkeeper receives the payment in TZS, and all iPhones are sold out, so they need to restock new iPhones

They must reorder another iPhone stock from abroad, from countries such as the UK, China, the US, or Dubai, where transactions are conducted in US dollars, not Tanzanian shillings.

Therefore, the shopkeeper must exchange the received TZS for USD to facilitate the acquisition of more iPhones from overseas.

However, the exchange rate from TZS to USD is unfavorable( 1 USD = 2,500 TZS) , resulting in fewer dollars for the shopkeeper.

This unfortunate exchange rate negatively affects the shopkeeper's revenue, potentially leading to diminished profits or even losses.

In order to mitigate potential losses and maximize profits, the shopkeeper has to devise a strategy. The subsequent time you buy an iPhone, they will set a higher price in Tanzanian Shillings.

This price hike is intended to compensate for the exchange rate losses incurred when converting TZS to USD.

The same applies to Tanzania manufacturers( who are buying some raw materials from abroad) , business owners, etc
