Surprised to hear the outrageous things said about Biju Babu by a BJP MP. I don’t think he knows that Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had given him an office next to his in Delhi while he was still Chief Minister of #Odisha to help with strategy during the Chinese conflict and fight the Chinese. I was about 13 years old then, but I remember how furious Biju Babu was with the Chinese attack and how much he did to repel it. I think the MP needs some mental doctor’s attention.

Happy to share that with prudent fiscal management, #Odisha was No-1 in the country in @NITIAayog’s Fiscal Health Index for the year 2023-24. It’s a pride for all of us that Odisha not only led the nation but also was comprehensively ahead with a score of 73.1 over even the 2nd rank State that could achieve a score of only 54.

It is matter of great satisfaction for me that Odisha had charted this journey from near bankruptcy in 2000 to lead the chart in every parameter which no #DoubleEngine govt could achieve in the country. From a precarious fiscal situation to becoming the top performer in fiscal health, Odisha’s journey reflected vision, and transformative governance under the principles of #5T.

Highlight of our governance can be seen in every parameter of fiscal health-whether it is quality of expenditure, revenue mobilisation, fiscal prudence and reducing loan burden-emerging as exemplar state.

This sustained fiscal stability empowered the state to invest in many people-centric initiatives like #BSKY, #KALIA, #MissionShakti, #SkillDevelopment, #OdishaSchoolTransformation, tribal development, #DisasterManagement, infrastructure development, irrigation projects, poverty alleviation initiatives and funding of our own food security scheme-without waiting for handouts from Centre. I thank the people of Odisha for being partners in this transformative journey.

But now I am worried with the way the Odisha double engine govt is mis-managing finances, pushing the State in the path of bankruptcy and push back the development momentum to 25 years back. May good sense prevail.

This morning there was an article, quite naturally, in the media that the Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was unhappy with the team's performance and conveyed his displeasure to the team manager.
And that one item explains the single largest reason, beyond the talent, beyond the money and the economics why Indian cricket today is far ahead of Pakistan cricket, and all other Indian sport.
For the truth is that in the 21st century at least, whatever happened in the BCCI board rooms did not impact how cricket was run on the ground.
I was in ESPN Star Sports when the BCCI was fighting a huge internal battle about broadcast rights, saw Sharad Pawar overthrow Dalmiya and his team, saw Lalit Modi and his vision for cricket.
Through that period, the age groups game went on, the Ranji trophy was played regularly. If anything, some of the Challenger and other formats were tweaked for better results. And the IPL was born
While at KKR, saw the IPL move to South Africa in a titanic battle between the BCCI and the home ministry. The change of IPL Commissioner, the fixing scam of 2013, the Mudgal committeee, the BCCI being run by an interim President from 2017, the return of the elected body.
Through all that India kept playing top level cricket, won two World Cups, dominated the Champions trophy, the test team won in Australia and the IPL just went from strength to strength.
There have been seismic changes in the BCCI, but the game on the ground remained unchanged, the show went on, and not one of the administrators allowed that to slip. Or allowed a President, be it Dalmiya or Pawar to dictate player selection for a tour, or saw a board member ordering the coach or captain to change a player.
The BCCI endured finally because of its fundamentally strong structure which allowed the game to be insulated from the politics of running a game.
And so while stars might come and stars might go, and administrators might come and go, Indian cricket goes on growing.
Other Indian sports have done well when driven by either a star perfomer or two or a charismatic administrator, but always stumbled when they left or retired
No other Indian sport has this powerful separation between the actual game and its administrators, and nor certainly does Pakistan cricket.
And that perhaps is the real story.

He could have turned 53 this November.

Born in Bihar’s Siwan district to a sugar mill clerk, Satyendra Dubey grew up in a modest household with five siblings. Brilliant from the start, he topped both his Class 10 and 12 board exams under the Bihar Board. Then came IIT Kanpur, where he pursued Civil Engineering . He could easily have followed his peers to the U.S., chasing dreams of comfort and prosperity.
But he didn’t.
He wanted to serve his own soil.

He joined the Indian Engineering Services (IES). His posting came as Project Director in the Golden Quadrilateral project under the National Highways Authority of India - a dream initiative of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Satyendra believed he was helping to build the new India.

But the idealist engineer soon collided with the machinery of greed. He refused to bow to the mafia–contractor nexus that had infected the system. He forced one contractor to rebuild a six-kilometer stretch of poorly constructed road. And then came his fatal mistake , he wrote directly to the Prime Minister’s Office, detailing the corruption he had witnessed in the “dream project.”

That letter, meant to be confidential, somehow got leaked.

A few weeks later, on a dew-soaked November morning in Gaya,which happened to be his Birthday, Satyendra’s body was found by the roadside, shot dead. He was 30.

So many investigations. So many questions.
And yet, two decades later, the mystery remains.
How did a confidential letter to the PMO end up in the wrong hands?
Who betrayed him and why?

Satyendra Dubey wanted to be sunlight - to illuminate, to cleanse.
He could have been that light.
But they didn’t let him shine.

Dear Govt, please put a ban on dashcams. Also, I can see a better patch of road before the potholes started, please help to create potholes there.

This is National Highway 49 (Kolkata–Surat Highway) according to Google Maps. The family in the Nexon is safe, but as per the owner, the lower side of the car is badly damaged, and the airbags have deployed.

Law enforcement especially traffic rules enforcement is as good as non-existent in Maharashtra. Some samples from today.
Illegal plates, no plates are common sights. Political party symbols seem to be an added layer of immunity against any possible action.
