WHO to halt diesel supplies to more than 20 Gaza hospitals amid fuel shortage

The World Health Organization (WHO) will suspend diesel supplies to more than 20 hospitals and health centers in Gaza from 19 September due to a funding shortfall, Gaza Health Ministry Director-General Munir al-Bursh said on Sunday. The WHO has not yet publicly confirmed the decision.

Bursh warned that the suspension comes as Gaza faces severe shortages of fuel and oil needed to operate hospitals, saying generators are already failing due to insufficient fuel, oil, and spare parts.

He said the loss of diesel supplies would threaten the operation of intensive care units, operating rooms, ventilators, oxygen stations, incubators, dialysis services, ambulances, and medicine and vaccine cold chains.

Gaza’s hospitals have relied on generators amid Israel’s ongoing blockade and the enclave’s prolonged power outage. The Gaza Health Ministry said several hospital generators have stopped working in recent days as shortages worsen, while the Gaza government media office has accused Israel of failing to meet its obligations under the so-called 'ceasefire' by restricting the entry of fuel and humanitarian supplies.
