Always find it funny when PhDs insist on being referred to as 'Dr' in every setting because "I worked hard for it".
Ok, but did you work hard for it so that people would call you 'doctor' all the time? Because that's pathetic
@AstrobioMike@OsburnLab Thanks Mike! And thank you for all your amazing online tutorials...at least one of my chapters would've been impossible without them!
I guess I am "not that kind of doctor" now??? Thank you to all who attended my defense, in-person or over Zoom. Very thankful for my time in the @OsburnLab and so excited for the future! But for now, I think I will take a nap...
@UrFreundHannah np! luck also seems to be heavily involved with soil extractions lol. I love the dirt 'crobes but if I had a dollar for every time one of my soil extractions failed...😭
@UrFreundHannah probably clay sorption/inhibitors in the soil as others have said! one thing that is relatively cheap and can work weirdly well is adding sterile skim milk solution to the extraction mix. would also recommend lots of bead beating if u don't do so already! https://t.co/mESsENG9je
@StacyAtEarth@niloulsarvian ok fair, I should clarify that I alternate between stress dreams and cave/microbe dreams, there is really nothing in between these days 😂
one thing that no one warned me about doing a PhD is that I now regularly dream about niche and abstract things like “ammonia in caves”…what have I become

Reminiscing about that time when the front page of my hometown's newspaper was plastered with a story about a cow that got loose downtown and had to be like sniped by a full-on SWAT team because no one could catch it while it was 'disrupting traffic'
Feeling pretty homesick today for the first time in years tbh. I love Chicago, but I miss (aspects of) Montana so damn much. I miss my family, the community I grew up with and found there, the near-constant sunshine, the endless wide open spaces.
the plain-language Montanan in me cringes as I edit "underwater caves" to "submerged horizontal conduits", but it must be done because it is more correct in this context and details matter!
I get it, but jeez...writing with scientific precision can feel so...pretentious lol
Scientists are not islands - #collaboration is, and always has been, key to doing good science. I suspect that folks who disagree with this statement are the same ones who would argue that James Watson and Francis Crick are who discovered DNA's structure...
Tell me people don't like working with you without telling me people don't like working with you:
"...maybe it has become too easy to collaborate. Great ideas rarely come from teams."
