We focus on how microbiome influences plant's resilience and molecular physiology to combate abiotic stresses. PI: @khanal79 @UHEngineering @UHEngineeringSL
Last week, students had the opportunity to visit Texas A&M University and explore greenhouse, phenotyping, and field research facilities.
The visit provided valuable exposure to plant phenotyping, controlled-environment agriculture, and modern crop research systems. @AbccUsda

🎉 Big congratulations to Dr. @Waqar_1A on officially graduating with his PhD from the UH 🎓
Your dedication, perseverance, and hard work have truly paid off. We are proud to celebrate this remarkable achievement and wish you continued success in all your future endeavors! 👏
Excited to share that Team Khan Lab presented multiple research posters at the Houston Regional Ecology & Evolution Symposium 2026, hosted by the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, University of Houston.
Huge congratulations to @Khan16Nasir for winning the Best Poster Presentation Award! At the Regional Ecology and Evolution Symposium at the University of Houston, Nasir presented his research on the interactions between reactive nutrients and silicon.
I'm happy to share that I crossed another accomplishment off my bucket list 🎉! Receiving the President's Circle Award for National Recognition at University of Houston is a true honor.
@microbiome_lab
After a thorough lab clean-up 🧼✨, it’s time for teamwork - refilling tip boxes and getting everything ready for the next experiments 🧪 Every small step keeps the research moving forward!
A special celebration ! 🎓✨
Following his recent PhD defense, @Waqar_1A treated the lab to an incredible homemade feast.
Great food, great company, and a great achievement, congratulations again waqar! 👏
From DNA to plants 🌱
Graduate Student Suhaib is working on genetic engineering of plants using CRISPR-Cas9 and gene overexpression to improve environmental stress tolerance.
Ongoing work includes Arabidopsis floral dip and soybean hairy root and whole-plant transformation,
Khan Lab @microbiome_lab day out at Brazos Bend State Park 🌿☀️
A wonderful day with the lab, enjoying nature, and a much-needed break outside work.
Thank you, Dr. Khan @khanal79, for the amazing BBQ and all the flavorful food!

I’m deeply grateful to Dr. Khan @khanal79 for his mentorship, guidance, and support throughout my PhD journey.
Thank you for sharing this milestone and for all your encouragement along the way.
@microbiome_lab spring get-together 🌿
We enjoyed a great day at Brazos Bend with good food, great company, and nice weather. The food was really delicious! Thanks to @khanal79
I'm proud to share that @Waqar_1A has successfully defended his PhD dissertation. Congratulations on this milestone and working @UHEngineeringSL
His dissertation focused on how silicon influences plant health and microbiome dynamics under stress.
@microbiome_lab
Thanks to @Waqar_1A, @Khan16Nasir, Albert Flavier, and @SuhaibA90555092 for their efforts in organizing it.

🧬 🦠 Instrumentation Day:
More than 12 students participated in learning RNA extraction, QC, cDNA synthesis, qPCR analysis, and data collection. We organize this every semester as a one-day event, sponsored by a USDA-NIFA award.
Meet our Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Gideon @gideonmmbando2, from Tanzania. He uses genetic engineering to improve crop stress resilience. He focuses on understanding nutrient transport pathways in C3/C4 plants.
