PhD student at UEA studying the requirements of wild pollinators within an agricultural landscape and the value they have for pollination of soft fruits
I passed my viva!!
Many thanks to my examiners @jakecologist and @JenGill3 for a great viva and @BerryWorldGroup and @NERCscience for funding my PhD and to the farms, family and friends that made it all possible!
I’ll miss you UEA and Norwich!
Massive congratulations @midge_ryan10 for passing your PhD viva today. @ueaceec excelled, as ever, with your research in cake form, complete with polytunnel.
Catch me on this mornings Farming Today This Week talking about my research on the use of honeybees for raspberry crop pollination and the risks to wild pollinators of overstocking honeybee hives #agroecology#pollination#honeybees@ueaceec @biouea
Imogen Ryan @plastic_freephd looks at the impact of managed honeybee populations on the pollination of raspberry plants... Take home is that required pollinations are much less than would occur w managed (not wild) visits... therefore they are likely not needed! #Pollinators22
Attempting to pass off the introduction of this number of hives (for honey production) as ecologically beneficial is grossly misleading. Saturating the landscape with managed bees doesn't benefit wild pollinators and conflicts with any other pollinator conservation efforts.
Did you know that bees contribute to a third of the food we eat? At M&S, we’re introducing more than 30 million bees to our Select Farms to help protect the future of these all-important pollinators and the planet. Follow our Bee Blog for updates: https://t.co/zUpPFRv7br🐝
@plastic_freephd is this week's #FridayFundraiser – she's shaved her head to fundraise for #TeamRefuge!
She's raised £1093 - that's enough to welcome 21 women into one of our refuges for one night!

I shaved my head to raise money for @RefugeCharity to support victims of domestic violence trapped with their abusers throughout lockdown 2.0. I am now only £42 away from raising £1K! Any donations, no matter how small, would be great!
#WorldBeeDay2020 Here’s the bee that started it all for me. These iridescent male Euglossa collect aromatic compounds from orchids and store them in the hind tibia (their funky flares). Their unique “perfume” concoction is thought to provide females with a measure of fitness
Pollinators in a #pandemic... Could #bumblebees benefit from the current pause on society?
PhD student, @ClaireWallace95 studies how road verges impact bumblebees & has written a fascinating blog on how she believes the #lockdown may affect #pollinators.
