I organized protests under de Blasio, Adams and now Mamdani. Under late de Blasio and early Adams, we routinely blocked traffic without being arrested. Then, under Adams, that changed. Cops themselves told us the orders were coming from the top. We could literally watch NYPD’s posture change alongside directives coming out of City Hall.

So spare me the idea that the mayor is some powerless figure with no responsibility for how his NYPD treats protesters. He appoints the police commissioner. He can remove the police commissioner. If none of this is his responsibility, then what exactly are we voting for?

And if the answer is “affordability,” is New York even more affordable right now? More importantly, since when do our principles end where our own material comfort begins?

But hey, maybe this is the “socialism” everyone was promised. More national than I expected.

This is the exact opposite of what Mamdani ran on.

He promised to arrest Netanyahu. Now Netanyahu is escorted to the UN by his NYPD while that same NYPD arrests people protesting him, including politicians endorsed by Mamdani.

And we’re supposed to treat their arrests as resistance without asking the obvious question: why is Mamdani’s NYPD arresting them in the first place? What are they doing to hold him accountable for that publicly?

Mamdani chose to keep Jessica Tisch. If his administration opposes these arrests, he has power over NYPD policy and leadership. Demand that he use it.

Instead, people keep peddling this fiction that Mamdani is powerless and his hands are tied. If his own supporters preemptively excuse him from using the powers he does have, what incentive is there to fight to fulfill the promise they elected him on?

Meanwhile the pro-Israel establishment will continue demanding concession after concession.

Why would any elected official take protest movements or their demands seriously if even when their preferred candidate takes power, they refuse to pressure him to use it?

Democratic @NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani promised during his campaign that he would arrest Netanyahu if he set foot in NYC. Since then, Mamdani has abandoned this promise, and recently announced that he will not be joining the protest campaign against Netanyahu.

Instead, under Mamdani's leadership, the NYPD is arresting antiwar activists protesting Netanhayu. This is a horrific betrayal of the antiwar movement and the Palestinian people.

Mamdani also re-hired Zionist and billionaire heir Jessica Tisch as NYPD Commissioner and endorsed Governor Kathy Hochul for re-election and Congressmember Hakeem Jeffries for U.S. House Speaker, both of whom are arch Zionist Democrats.
