This is absolute gold.
The U.S. Navy produced a 1967 dating etiquette film called How to Succeed with Brunettes. It hilariously shows what not to do before demonstrating the right way.

The Psychology of Intelligence Analysis by Richard J. Heuer
— Review and Takeaways —
“Pay more attention to your doubts”
A classic book that explores the psychological factors affecting intelligence analysis, including bias, group dynamics, and cognitive limitations. It highlights the importance of structured analytical techniques, diverse perspectives, and the role of uncertainty.
—Analytic Thinking Is a Practiced Skill —
📝 “Thinking analytically is a skill like carpentry or driving a car.” It can be learned and improved with practice, but not by sitting in a classroom and being told how to do it. It’s about learning by doing!
— Suspending Judgement —
📝 Suspend judgement for as long as possible to gather more information. Once judgements are made, they stick. Convictions are hard to change.
But don’t overvalue more information. It boosts confidence far more than accuracy. Studies show increased information causes a strong rise in confidence but only a negligible increase in accuracy.
Testing more hypotheses is often better than gathering more information.
📝 Techniques for Creative Thinking:
The most important technique is Deferred Judgement. Separate the idea generation phase from the evaluation phase. Get all ideas on the table before judging them.
- Quantity leads to quality.
- Thinking should range freely.
- Cross-pollination.
📝 Mental Schema:
“If information does not fit into what people know, or think they know, they have great difficulty processing it.”
Mental schemas are structures that organize knowledge and guide cognition and behaviour. People use them to categorize objects and events and interpret the world.
Example: Chess masters and ordinary players viewed random chess positions for 5-10 seconds. Both recalled only 6-7 pieces. But with positions from actual games, masters remembered nearly all, while ordinary players recalled half a dozen. Masters recognized meaningful patterns via mental schemas.
📝 “The most probable hypothesis is usually the one with the least evidence against it, not the one with the most evidence for it.”
⭐️ Takeaway: How to Break Mental Blockage
1. Take a break. Time helps form new connections.
2. Talk it out loud. Say it aloud, ask and answer questions. Spoken and written language use different brain areas; switching untangles problems.
⚖️ Verdict
Reading books like this improves thinking by eroding false confidence through awareness of biases and judgement flaws. It is humbling. This book targets intelligence analysts who interpret information to understand, mitigate, and neutralize threats.
Hence it is not for everyone, which is why I struggled with it. It is often dry and technical.
No words. Here is a peak at one of our most incredible drone flights around a #tornado to date near Tulliby Lake, AB.
The odds were completely stacked against us on this one, but thanks to some determination to make the 18 hour drive up here pulling an all-nighter, and brilliant forecasting by Nelson Tucker we were able to see this beauty.
This will likely be one of our last intercepts of the season, thank you so much to everyone for following along as we press on to properly measure tornadoes to push weather science forward!

Heavy rainfall late last week in central #Iowa was the 1,000-year event for the highest amounts. That means in any year, there is a 0.1% chance of those rainfall amounts occurring. Does not mean they occur every 1,000 years. It describes the event's significance. #iawx
The forecast for the remainder of the work week calls for seasonable temperatures, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. The threat for severe weather is low, with only isolated, scattered pop-up storms possible this afternoon to early evening. #iawx
