A gold microphone used by Freddie Mercury has obliterated its estimate at auction in London.

Freddie Mercury’s gold Shure 565 SD microphone was presented to Queen in 1980, and the late-great frontman used the microphone for special performance of "Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love)" on Top Of The Pops in June 1982.

Finished in distinctive gold chrome, the item is the very first Freddie Mercury microphone with direct provenance to be offered at auction.

It went under the hammer on April 30, 2026 at Prop Store’s Music Memorabilia Live Auction in London and fetched a massive £151,200, smashing its pre-auction estimate of £30,000 to £60,000.

The microphone was one of 327 rare instruments, handwritten lyrics, stage-used pieces and iconic personal artefacts sold at the auction, achieving a combined total of £1.9 million.

"The guys put down the backing track for that one when I was out doing something in Munich, where we were working; Freddie said he wrote the song in his bathtub at the Munich Hilton. I came back and thought, 'Oh my God, it’s almost finished. Let me put some guitar on it before they stick it out.' Fred plays the rhythm acoustic guitar. All I really did was add a kind of ersatz rock and roll solo and some backing harmonies and it was done."
