Rob Sturdy signed a three-generation tenancy at Eden Farm, so that one of his children could take it on after him. Then the estate that owns the land agreed a deal to cover forty-two per cent of it in solar panels.

His grandfather Guy came to Eden Farm in 1954. His father John took over in 1971. Three generations at Old Malton, North Yorkshire, growing cereals and rearing dairy calves across 280 acres. A hundred and thirty of those acres are going under 90,000 panels and a battery storage system.

The Sturdys do not own an acre of it. They rent. The landlord signs the deal and collects the money. The tenant loses half the farm and gets nothing.

And it is worse than half. Take those fields away and what is left barely grows enough straw to bed and feed the cattle. You do not lose 42 per cent of a farm. You lose the farm, slowly, while it still looks like a farm from the road.

North Yorkshire Council refused the plan in October 2023. Five hundred people objected. It was the biggest fight over a planning application the area had ever seen. Then, just before the public inquiry opened, the government stepped in and took the final decision away from the inspector and handed it to a minister.

At that inquiry, the developer's barrister told the room the scheme would take just 0.16 hectares of the very best farmland.

Nought point one six. That is what a grading map can be made to say about a farm that feeds people.

The minister approved it in February 2025. His decision notice gave significant weight to the fact that the site sat next to a substation.

The family is finished because the cable was close.

They went to the High Court and spent heavily doing it. In September the judge found no arguable case. There is no compensation. Emma Sturdy has said they are not sure they can even stay in the house.

Rob Sturdy said one thing at the start that has stayed with me. He said he did not want this to become the last harvest.

He signed a contract for his children. A minister read a map.

After sacking David Lammy, it looks as though jury trials have been saved.

This is a major victory for English liberty — particularly free speech — as Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated that he does not intend to press ahead with David Lammy’s sinister plan to slash our right to trial by jury.

As a spokesperson for the Prime Minister has rightly said, trial by jury is a “cornerstone of our justice system”.

The Free Speech Union has been at the forefront of the campaign to protect this precious right, alongside Labour MP @KarlTurnerMP, Conservative Shadow Justice Secretary @NJ_Timothy and Reform UK MP @RobertJenrick.

Our research showed that those charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court with a jury than they are in a magistrates’ court without one.

Had Lammy got his way, more people would have found themselves behind bars simply for exercising their right to free speech.

We have defended numerous members arrested over comments they made online or for attending protests who were ultimately acquitted by juries. One such case was Jamie Michael, a Royal Marine veteran who was reported to the police by a Labour Party staffer over a video criticising mass migration in the wake of the Southport murders. He was arrested at work but acquitted by a jury in just 17 minutes.

The Free Speech Union’s petition calling on the Government to guarantee our ancient right to trial by jury attracted more than 50,000 signatures.

This is excellent news and a significant victory for free speech.

Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't.
He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies.
She said yes.
Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway.
Then he bred them.
The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, two generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to a scent their grandmother had been taught to fear.
Jo documented it all in a 33-page research paper and presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.
A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.

New laws in Afghanistan, introduced by the Taliban, mean that men can now marry girls at any age – there is no limit.
