The Siri/EU situation is a regulatory masterpiece.

Apple cannot launch Apple Intelligence in the EU.

Why? Because under the DMA, if Siri gets deep system access, every other AI assistant must get the exact same. Anything less would be unfair competition. A gatekeeper privileging its own service.

So either Siri ships and every Shenzhen startup, Cyprus shell company, and nephew hackathon project gets identical root access to 450 million Europeans’ digital lives or nothing ships.

Apple proposed a “Trusted System Agent”: a security intermediary so third-party assistants get capabilities without ripping the phone wide open.

The EU rejected it.

Magnificent.

Apple’s response: fine, then no developer APIs either. No Apple Intelligence, no third-party integrations, no foundation model access for EU developers. The entire layer simply does not exist on this continent.

Excellent.

This is the path. Why depend on American AI when we can build the entire stack ourselves? A European foundation model, trained on a European GPU cluster, running on a European OS, on a European phone, manufactured in a European fab, powered by European nuclear plants we have spent fifteen years closing.

Estimated time to ship: 2047.

Estimated cost: the GDP of three member states.

Estimated outcome: a chatbot that requires a cookie banner before each response.

Worth it.

In the meantime, European users are protected from Apple processing data Apple already holds by ensuring nobody processes anything at all.

Not a bug. The intended outcome.

Regulatory product design with a sledgehammer, swung with precision.

I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly."

The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal.

When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience."

Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable.

When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates.

I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped.

The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault."

I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology."

Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident.

Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize."

I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time."

They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again."

I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes.

Los FP1 en el circuito de Marina Bay llevan siempre muchos asteriscos. Tanto los FP1 como los FP3 se disputan de día, mientras que los FP2, clasificación y carrera se disputan de noche.

La diferencia en temperaturas es abismal (más si llueve, tal y como está previsto) y hará que estas sesiones no sean el mejor espejo para imaginar cómo será el resto del fin de semana.

Dicho esto, hablando estrictamente de lo sucedido en esta sesión: lidera Fernando Alonso. Aston Martin llega a Singapur con muchas esperanzas, pero imagino que no tantas.

Mientras Lance Stroll termina P18, Alonso ha anotado sus vueltas con muchísima facilidad, una gran señal por el momento. El coche no parece difícil por estas calles. De hecho, al final de la sesión ha dado otra vuelta con blandos de 8 vueltas y ha anotado un tiempo que le habría bastado para ser P4.

Por lo demás, Ferrari y Red Bull superan a unos McLaren que ni mucho menos han mostrado todas sus cartas. Sorprendería ver el resto del fin de semana con Max Verstappen por delante de Oscar Piastri y Lando Norris. Hoy no han estado cómodos, Piastri se ha quejado bastante por radio.
