Kenya and Germany continue to build a strong economic partnership anchored on trade, investment, innovation and sustainable development.
At the Kenya-Germany Business Day held in Berlin stakeholders explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in agribusiness, renewable energy, digitalization and labour mobility which are key sectors driving economic transformation and shared prosperity.
Speaking at the forum Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a competitive business environment that attracts investment, promotes value addition, creates jobs and strengthens regional and global trade linkages.
The State Department for Trade held a national validation exercise for the Kenya-EU EPA Implementation Strategy, bringing together key stakeholders from government agencies, the private sector and representatives of the EU.
The forum provided a platform to review proposed interventions, finalize the implementation framework and strengthen institutional coordination mechanisms for effective rollout.
The strategy aims to expand and diversify Kenya’s exports beyond traditional commodities, boost value addition and industrial growth, attract both local and foreign investment and improve overall competitiveness. It also prioritizes inclusive growth by creating opportunities for SMEs, women, youth and other vulnerable groups.
To achieve this, the strategy focuses on six priority areas. These include strengthening sanitary and phytosanitary measures to meet EU standards and safeguard health, upgrading standards and technical regulations and modernizing customs and trade facilitation to cut costs and delays.
It also targets ICT and digital trade to expand e-commerce and digital services, promotes structured commodity trade through warehouse systems and exchanges, and embeds trade and sustainable development principles to ensure climate-smart and responsible business practices in Kenya-EU trade.
Acting Secretary for Trade Michael Mandu speaking during the exercise acknowledged efforts from all the stakeholders saying the strategy will enhance trade relations between Kenya and the European Union.
