Brother Jones Ikpor: I forgave The Parents Who Couldn’t Give Me What They Didn’t Have
My mother apologised to me once—for the years she spent treating her anxiety by controlling mine. She was fifty-nine. She cried. I held her hand and told her it was okay. The moment I said it, she started explaining why she’d done it. I just sat there nodding.
The ways they hurt you were often the same ways they had been hurt.
My mother would refuse to serve food she thought she'd gotten wrong, even when nobody else noticed. Then she'd go quiet for the rest of the night. Same wound. Different room. The question is whether you carry it consciously, or whether it carries you.
For many, home was a battlefield. Or worse, a desert.
Your parents may have been emotionally absent, critical, or so deep in their own problems that loving a child correctly was beyond them.
Maybe every report card had to be perfect. Maybe every emotion was treated as an inconvenience. Maybe you learned that being easy to love meant needing less. Maybe you lingered outside for a few minutes before going in because you didn’t know which version of your parent would be waiting.
As an adult, you carry a low-grade resentment you can’t fully name. You watch friends call their parents for advice and realize you’ve never known what that feels like.
The lesson a child learns about themselves is a reflection of the room, not the child.
Waiting for a parent who doesn’t know how to apologize to finally apologize is like asking someone to describe a language they never learned. They don’t know the words. They don’t even know they’re missing them. They can’t give you what they don’t have.
Your history is not your destiny. Adults from loveless homes can — often through therapy, sometimes through one person who showed them what healthy love looks like—develop what researchers call earned secureattachment. Your nervous system can learn at forty what it should have learned at four.
To forgive your parents, you have to mourn the childhood you should have had. Look at them not through the eyes of a wounded child, but through the eyes of an adult who can see that nobody taught them how to handle their own feelings.
Understanding that doesn’t excuse their behavior. It frees you from expecting them to become the person you needed them to be.
Forgiving your parents doesn’t mean letting them back in. You can forgive an abusive parent from across an ocean with their number blocked.
Sometimes forgiveness means giving up the hope that the relationship will become something it has never been.
When Dreams Die of Hunger
When I was a child, I used to think people abandoned their dreams only because they weren't brave enough to chase it.
Then I grew up.
Turns out, courage has very little to do with an empty refrigerator.
There is something deeply unfair about asking someone to choose passion when survival is standing at the door asking for rent. We love telling people to follow their hearts as though hearts have never worried about tuition fees, overdue bills, sick parents, younger siblings waiting for school allowance, or cupboards that echo when you open them. We romanticise the starving artist until the starving part stops sounding poetic and starts sounding exactly like what it is.
Hunger.
I have heard some people tell their young ones and children that relying solely on what they love to do might not generate enough income for them to survive on or support a livelihood. Ss if it is meant to be comforting. As if practicality is a life raft and passion is only extra weight you should throw overboard. Maybe they're right. Maybe passion doesn't pay electric bills. Maybe dreams don't come with health insurance. Maybe love for your craft cannot be exchanged for groceries at the cashier.
But knowing they're right has never made it hurt less.
I wonder how many people are walking around carrying versions of themselves that never got the chance to exist. The painter who became an accountant because someone had to. The musician who learned spreadsheets instead of scales. The writer who stopped writing anything except emails because words stopped paying enough to survive.
Sometimes I catch myself wondering what my mother was passionate about before practicality learned her name. I know the answer to that. She was a writer and music composer who sacrificed her creative genius to become a homemaking wife and mother of five children. It was only a few years ago that she began to record some of her songs one at a time. She always chose what was necessary over what she loved.
I wonder what my father dreamed of becoming before he started measuring every opportunity against rent, tuition, and tomorrow's meals.
I can answer this question with clarity too. My father wanted to become a lawyer, but he ended up studying political science and teaching government in secondary schools until he became a principal. He could have studied more and pushed for his dream, but he met my mother, fell in love and didn’t want to delay marrying her lest another man take her away from him because he wanted to fulfil his dreams
We spend so much of our lives thanking our parents for everything they gave us that we rarely stop to ask what they had to give up. Maybe before they became providers, they were simply people with dreams that sounded just as impossible as mine.
That's why this hurts more than I know how to explain.
What hurts isn't choosing practicality. What hurts is realising that the choice was never really yours. Because what kind of choice is it when one path lets you eat, and the other asks you to gamble with everyone depending on you? We call it following reality, but reality has always favored the people who could afford to lose, and that's why dreaming feels different depending on where you're standing.
For some, dreams are destinations. For others, they are luxuries with price tags.
It's easy to tell someone to chase what sets their soul on fire when you've never had to wonder whether that fire can keep the lights on.
I don't think people stop loving their passions. I think they learn to love other people more.
They choose stability because someone has to.
They choose certainty because uncertainty has already taken enough from them.
They choose the paycheck over the poem, the office over the orchestra they love, the promotion over the painting, because the responsibilities around them became impossible to ignore.
And that's the quiet grief nobody talks about.
Not everyone who let go wanted to.
Some of them simply ran out of room to keep holding on.
We celebrate the people who made it, the ones who bet everything on a dream and won.
We build documentaries around them.
We call them proof that passion always finds a way, but we rarely hear from the ones who were just as talented, just as relentless, just as deserving.
The only difference was that they couldn't afford to fail.
Maybe that's why I can never judge the person who chose practicality. I don't know what was waiting for them at home. I don't know what bills were folded inside their wallet. I don't know whose future they had to carry before they could even think about building their own.
Dreams don't disappear because people stop believing in them; they disappear because survival asks for a sacrifice, and dreams are often the first thing laid on the altar.
People love saying that passion cannot feed you. Maybe they're right, but I think what they forget to mention is that neither can regret.
The cruellest part has never been choosing practicality. It's waking up years later, wondering whether the life that kept you alive was also the life that slowly taught a part of you how to die.
Maybe that's why I wonder what my parents dreamed of becoming before they became somebody's parents. Maybe that's what my parents did. Maybe that's what millions of people do every single day. They don't stop dreaming. They simply hand those dreams to the people they love and hope they grow into the lives they never had the chance to live.
That's why some dreams die of hunger — not because they weren't worth chasing, but because someone else needed to eat first.
Someone asked me why many smart people are poor...
Money rewards a completely different skill set than intelligence does.
It rewards distribution, which means getting your thing in front of people. Some smart people find that horrifying.
Money rewards timing, which means showing up before everyone else figures it out. Intelligence usually needs time to let an idea marinate.
Money rewards persistence, which means doing the same boring task day after day after day, including on a Wednesday in February when nobody’s watching and the radiator’s clanking and you’d rather be anywhere else.
Money rewards a kind of public shamelessness that smart people find physically painful.
Smart people don’t act. They research. I think research is their favourite hobby.
They research everything so much that it’s no longer a means to an end; it’s the purpose.
They spend two years comparing index funds.
They read three books on negotiation before asking for a raise.
They spent two years comparing index funds.
They spent two years deciding whether to move to a different city, and then they won’t move anywhere because everywhere sucks anyway.
Meanwhile, somebody with a high school diploma and zero anxiety about being wrong opened a Roth IRA in 2019, dumped money into it every month like clockwork, and is now sitting on a portfolio that would make our print-shop philosopher weep into his instant coffee.

She: In 2022, I told my older sister of my intention to introduce my intended to my mother.
She said I should not try it because my mother had prevented my two older sister’s marriages by throwing tantrums and sabotaging every effort until the men left them.
I laughed.
I went home and told my mum I wanted to bring home my man.
She said I was a child and I will not be getting married before my sisters.
I said “You will sleep, I will pour petrol all over this house and burn you alive.
They already told me you are a witch who is determined to stop your children from getting married so that you won’t have grandchildren.
I am determined to kill anyone who stands in my path!
Look into my eyes; I am not my sisters.
I am getting married.
I have bought your clothes and shoes and invited all the relevant people for the occasion.
You will dress up and play your part or you will die.
I will not pray for your death
I will kill you and kill myself so that those coming behind me and my elders can be free.”
Wedding day came, my mother was at the forefront of all activities.
She danced and ate and even cracked jokes
Till tomorrow, I am the only daughter of hers out of five that is married.
The others have tried and she had insisted they will not get married as long as she is alive!!!
A few years ago, my fifteen year old son said he was depressed!
He really didnt know what the word meant but he used it.
I kept quiet.
Later in the night, when everybody had gone to sleep, i woke him up and showed him a video of depressed people.
I said i was concerned for him and will have to check him into the hospital the next day before he gets worse
He looked at me and said "I am not depressed Daddy, i am just a bit unhappy that time and i am fine now"
He had never used the word again since then

You have any insight whatsoever into your capacity for good until you have some well-developed insight into your capacity for evil
The greatest lesson I have learnt in my walk with God is better told as a short story
Here it goes…
2019 November, last Friday of the month, we were having a vigil.
Night of Glory at a church in Ogudu.
I was to minister
Service started with intense worship, I was in the congregation, singing along with the minstrels.
Suddenly the Holy Spirit said “Leave the premises…..”
I left.
I walked out of the church, crossed the road and continued to walk towards Magrellos eatery on Ogudu road.
I got to an electric pole and the Holy Spirit said “Stop”.
I stopped.
The He said “Is anybody looking for you?
I said No sir
He asked again, “Since you left did the worship stop, can you still hear the music?”
I said Yes
Then he asked again, “Did anyone know you have left the service? Did anyone notice? Is anyone panicking? Is anyone feeling like without your presence the service will fail?”
I said “No!”
Then he said “This is not your service, you are not in charge, you are a worshipper as everyone else in the meeting is. You are not more special or more significant.
This service is about ME! I summoned those who I have called to this meeting and I brought them in by my own power.
They have gathered unto me, not you!
You are not in charge, I am.
I said “Yes sir”
Then he said “Wait here” and I did for an hour in the middle of the night.
The service went on and the Holy Soirit moved in the midst of the people with so many healings and testimonies.
Then He said “Go back to the service and worship with my people”
I went back and I got the message till today

I started out in business with a partner.
He was the person who understood the business and secured the investor, who happened to be his uncle.
The investor put in about one hundred million Naira in the business.
We began the business with this partner as the head, while I managed the business.
He showed me how the business works and then left me to run it.
We made progress, but all he began to do was spend the money anyhow, living a reckless lifestyle.
He comes in, demands millions, and disappears for weeks until he runs out of money and only returns to collect more money.
He did this until the business began to run into losses.
This was about the time I joined GSWMI through a friend and began to listen to the word of God.
One day, Brother Gbenga talked about ownership, and it really resonated with me.
I took stock of our business one day and realised the business would fold up with me in trouble if I didn’t take some drastic steps.
I called this my partner for the umpteenth time and spoke with him as a brother, but he refused to listen to my counsel.
After this, i reached out to the main investor and explained everything that had happened to him about the business. He asked me to take stock of the goods and the machinery we have, and I did. After this, he demanded that I sell everything in the warehouse and refund his money to him. My partner heard this and got very furious. He went to the office and told everybody he had sacked me, and I was not to touch anything in the warehouse or set foot on the establishment again. By this time, I had refunded the investor fully.
I reached out to the investor with my business plan and assured him that if he invested in me, I would handle his funds wisely. He encouraged me to look for a warehouse and start off by myself. I reached out to Brother Gbenga, and he assured me that if I go into the business by myself, I would be successful in no time without owing anybody a penny. I heard him, but it seems impossible that I could go into this business without someone backing me financially. I went ahead and secured a warehouse. Once this was done, I reached out to the investor, and he categorically told me he was no longer interested in supporting me. Wow. I had spent everything I had to secure a warehouse on rent.
I, however, remembered that Brother Gbenga told us in PSSBC class that if God told us to do something, we should not apply logic. He said, “If you are walking in a direction God told you to walk, and you find yourself at a dead end or facing a river or a sea, don’t stop, just keep walking. So I did. I had met many people in the course of doing the business, I reached out to one who had some equipment but didn’t have a warehouse big enough to install them. He agreed to release the equipment to me for installation, and we worked out a payment plan.
Next i went to another company that sells forklifts and spoke to them about renting three for a certain amount monthly. They also agreed and sent the forklifts to my warehouse. Now I need goods, and importing the coils from China was going to cost me a lot in dollars. At this point i came to the Burning Light conference.
While at the conference i got a call. A Chinese woman had imported coils for sale in Nigeria, but the warehouse she wanted to use had disappointed her at the last minute. She asked me to send her twenty million Naira to her so that she could sell me the coils. I told her I didn’t have such an amount at hand, and we ended the call.
When I got back to the warehouse on Monday after the retreat, I saw goods already unloaded in the warehouse. The woman said I should pay her as I sell them. Wow! Jesus!!!! How? We began to sell.
Another person whom I helped with some goods he imported that nobody wanted to buy from him because they were the wrong specification reached out to me and paid for a container of goods to support me for the help I rendered to him in selling the goods that he had but couldn’t sell off. Wow. More goods.
A man came to me at my warehouse to ask me how the business is done. I
explained to him plainly as I have always done. He said he wanted to import directly from China without any middleman’s involvement. I told him I had been to China and connected him with my contacts. The man imported several containers and asked me to work out a profit-sharing formula with him, as he wanted to just import the goods, but preferred that they be sold in my warehouse and processed there. Jesus, more goods!
As I write this, my warehouse can boast of goods worth hundreds of millions, and I started out with just the word of prophecy.
I have bought my own goods from the profits made from these transactions, while I still handle goods sent by these individuals, whom the Lord brought to me by the power of the Holy Spirit. I am the CEO of my own multimillion Naira business. This is my testimony! Glory be to Jesus!!!!!
Unrequited Love
I received the darkest and most troubling message over the course of the night.
A man who suspects his girlfriend of cheating on him wrote to me detailing how he planned to ruin her life and then kill her.
He didn't ask for counsel or prayer
It was not a hoax or prank message
He included her full name, address, and screenshots of WhatsApp messages and text exchanges between his girlfriend and the person he suspects her of cheating on him with, and also two videos of his personal investigations into the cheating saga.
He said his girlfriend is a nurse and that he was responsible for her training for the past nine years. He said the person she is cheating on him with is a doctor with whom his girlfriend had been planning to relocate out of America to Canada.
He said a lot, and I am convinced he is hurt beyond what one could simply ignore or tell him to get over it.
Dealing with the intense pain of betrayal, especially by a lover or a spouse, is not a walk in the park. Our pain threshold differs, and what one could walk away from might kill another with heartache.
Pain is also very personal. The more we feel we have been made a fool of and our vulnerability taken advantage of, the more intense the pain will be.
Imagine the young man saying that his girlfriend told him several times to drive her to an address where she was supposed to be doing home care giving for an elderly woman.
He would drive her there and sit in the car for three to four hours until she was done, and then drive her back home because the place is located in a very remote area of the city.
He later found out that she goes there to sleep with one of her lovers, whom she connected with on OnlyFans (she never told him she had an account or did anything like that), and in the chat he read, she referred to him as "My Uber Man"
He said it was the most humiliating experience for him.
Pain does funny things to our reasoning. It blurs the lines of reality and tunnels our vision in one direction, at the exclusion of all our options.
It makes us feel that unless we get even or "revenge", we cannot have closure.
This is a lie.
There is no man or woman in this world who love cannot make a fool of.
It is the prerogative of love to turn good friends to sworn enemies, the strong to a weakling, the rich to a bumbling fool, and the powerful into a blabber.
Was it not love that made Paris steal Helen away from Troy, leading to a colossal war? Was it not love that turned Solomon into a child in the hand of Makeda, the Queen of Ethiopia
Love is both a pain and a joy in all its expressions. A child you are taking delight in as he or she takes his or her first steps is the same child you are very much afraid might get hurt in the process of walking.
We learn to take what comes to us in the name of love with gratitude.
The lady cheating on this man would have her own story to tell.
She might not know any better, or she might have been hurt by someone else and unable to deal with the hurt the right way, or she might have decided to hurt another person in return.
Unless one talks to her, one cannot really tell what she was struggling with and why she has made the choices that put a target on her back
I spoke with the man extensively until he calmed down
I reached out to his girlfriend, and we talked for some time
She agreed to refund him the full cost of her tuition and the credit card debt he dug himself into, while doing everything to care for her
She said he was never her type, she told him so right from the beginning, but he was like a lost puppy who thought it had found its owner
He stayed with her, and when he offered to sponsor her to the USA so that she could study nursing and make money, she took the offer
She said he had proposed to her several times, but she turned him down because deep down she knew she could never marry him
She admitted that while she was with him, she was at the same time effectively searching for someone worthy of her love, someone she would love enough to settle down with
She said that after she found the person, she tried to leave the relationship, but her boyfriend started blackmailing her with threats that he would kill her and kill himself
She said he was too obsessed with her, and his love for her was almost cultic and fetishistic. She said she had always felt like he was mentally unstable and dealing with some deep trauma, with the way he craved affection, attention, and placed himself in places where it was obvious that he was not wanted
She said she would be happy to repay him, provided he would leave her alone and never contact her again.
I was happy the issue was resolved.
Officially, the two of them are no longer together.
He said he would have preferred to have her than anything in this world.
I told him it is not a good thing for any man or woman to desire or love someone who does not love him or her back
Unrequited love burns like fire and can only be cured by true love.
PS: Learn to love yourself enough not to allow your feelings for another person to dehumanize you
If the love is burning with a passion that crosses the line of measure into obsession, it is unhealthy for you
There is no sense in loving someone until you lose your senses
If truth be told, the person you love that desperately will not love you back, because who wants to love a senseless person
Everything must be done in moderation, most especially love

This is so true.
Crown yourself in your bedroom, when you have nothing to your name.
Call yourself the blessed one, the lender to nations, the solution provider, the voice of counsel at the table of kings.
Then get on with life and become those things
The Tainted Mindset
A man was looking to remarry after a nasty divorce. He was living in the United Kingdom, and his divorce happened in the UK
His parents advised him to travel to Nigeria and find a proper Nigerian lady to get married to
He took a break and travelled to Nigeria
He had spoken to some friends and relatives, and they had lined up several possible ladies between the ages of 35 to 40 for him to meet and probably date
He told them he would like to narrow down the number of possible dates.
He wanted someone who had a good job because he didn't want anyone marrying him as a means of escaping poverty
They narrowed the list down to three ladies
One is a banker, the other is a lawyer with a very top firm, and the third is the procurement officer for a very big company
He took the banker out on a date and discovered that the banker wasn't married or in a relationship because her parents and siblings depended on her for every nickel she earned, and they were afraid that if she got married, her focus would shift to her husband and family.
So they sabotaged all her relationships and manipulatively kept her away from all forms of relationships with the hope that she would meet a rich man one day or remain single if she ever fell in love with someone who is not so rich.
He didn't bother to go for a second date
He felt the lady's family had too much control over her at the age of 37
He walked away.
He took the lawyer out on a date.
The lawyer was beautiful, drove a nice car, and was dressed in expensive and classy outfits.
He asked her how much she earned per annum, and she told him. She also told him how much her rent was, how many times she travels abroad in a year, her jewelry collection, her designer shoes and bags, etc
He did the calculation and came to the conclusion that the lady was living on much more than her salary.
It was very obvious
He didn't want to scare her away on that first date
They had a nice time, and he could see that she was quite exposed to luxurious life and treatment.
Later that night, after they had both gotten home, the lady sent him a message that for their next day, he must send a driver to pick her up and return her to her house after the date, or come around to pick her up himself.
He called her immediately to apologise for the oversight, knowing how dangerous Lagos could be at night
While they were on the call, he heard her bell ring (this was way past midnight)
She asked who was at the gate, and there was a reply
She went to the gate and heard someone say, "Good evening, ma'am, my boss said I should come and deliver a drum of petrol for your generator, and this cash."
She said okay
He was quiet while the man and some other people delivered what they brought and left.
She didn't bother to explain, and he didn't bother to ask.
He knew she was a kept woman
A side chick hustling to opt out of being the other woman to become the main woman in another relationship.
He didn't bother calling her again.
The procurement officer had an official car, a driver, and was making good money.
She was also from a good family, and all her siblings are doing very well independently
She was, however, quite infested with the enemy consciousness and doctrine of her church
She told him it was prayer and fasting that got her to the position she was holding, and without it, she was sure she would have died or been made crazy or become a victim of one witchcraft attempt or the other.
When they went to eat, she complained about everything and was nasty to the waitresses, saying the food was too expensive
She was no fun
She told him he needed to give his life to Jesus and come for deliverance in her church
He said he couldn't wait for the date to end
They surely do not belong in the same world
He got a call from a friend in New York
He shared with his friend all the efforts he had made to get a wife
His friend told him that the Nigerian society is the wrong place for him to find the kind of woman that would fit his upbringing
"You grew up in the UK, and you think you can understand or cope with a lady who is born and bred in Nigeria. You must be joking. Your wife is in Europe, America, or the United Kingdom. If you marry someone from Africa, you will deal with a poverty mindset all your life," said the friend.
The friend sent him the phone number of a lady, a Danish-Nigerian who is based in Norway.
He sent her a message on WhatsApp
She replied
They set up a time when they could talk
They started talking and grew to like each other
They didn't even have to talk about "How much do you earn? What work do you do? Can you feed yourself? Is your family going to be a burden? etc
Like him, the lady left home at eighteen to live by herself and has been self-reliant since then
She talked freely about her previous relationships, and so did he
(The Nigerian ladies were cagey and secretive about their past relationships. All three had been sexually active but claimed it was either one time many years ago with a touch of I have been celibate or I have slept with only three people (first love, last lover, and one whose name always somehow changed constantly in the course of the conversation, etc)
He said the liberation and sincerity of their conversation was so enthralling, he told her he would fly down to Norway to see her on his way to London.
She told him to give her a heads-up as soon as he bought his flight tickets.
He bought the tickets the following week, shared the pictures with her, and she told him she would pick him up at the airport.
When he got to Norway, she picked him up and drove him to an Airbnb
When he got to the apartment, he met brand new clothes
The lady had gone shopping with her money for him
She bought everything from gloves to murflers, to jeans, T-shirts, perfumes, and so many other things.
She had reserved seats at classy restaurants, the museum, and other places of interest in the city
The week he spent there in Norway with her altered his worldview about women and also healed him of his bias against women.
He said his terrible marriage and other experiences he had before then made him see all women as parasitic monsters.
He said the only disagreement they had that whole week was when they got to a restaurant and he forgot to pull her seat for her.
He married her three months later.
PS: Poverty has altered the mindset of most Nigerians.
Religion has ruined our perspective of what it is to truly live
When you live with a consciousness of lack, and you don't have a means to earn money legitimately
People become your fish, and relationships become your bait
If anyone should profess to like or love you, your instinct will be to milk that emotion for money
You are always in survival mode, and every emotion you express is tainted by your response to lack or plenty.
If you like someone but he does not have money, you kill the emotion, and if you dislike someone but he or she can lift you out of poverty, you develop affection for him or her by force
Nigerian ladies see spending money on a man as beneath them; for this reason, and when they do spend it, they talk about it with regret all the days of their lives
Nigerian men see spending money on a lady as an accomplishment that rewards them with sex
These mindsets are tainted by poverty consciousness.
We must not pass this on to the next generation.
