Another irony here: the baseball season change concept is motivated by having to play outdoor games in February.
Again, no easy answers here and this is healthy discourse imo.
Sorry, I completely disagree. The proposed model will strain our overworked support staff. It will add to our budget challenges due to travel and indoor facility rental. And who is asking for outdoor soccer matches in the Midwest in February?! I ask D1 ADs to join me at Club 241.
“…will strain our overworked support staff.”
Even tho I like the soccer season change proposal, this sentence is a real issue in college sports. I’m concerned also.
BUT…
1) soccer is not adding games
2) “don’t make it worse” isn’t a solution
Where is the solution?

Down in Arizona at the MLB lab(Arizona Fall League at Salt River Fields ) they are experimenting with outfield positioning by rule in order to increase offense. The CF has to be 285-290’( Average in today’s game is 323’)from HP at the time of the pitch & the corner outfielders are also shallow & closer to the lines. It has greatly increased offense in all areas because of the depth & wider gaps.
POTENTIAL IMPLICATIONS
1) We will draft more speed in the outfield & the DH type outfielder will have less value.
2) Line drives to all fields will have more value because they will have less hang time & with outfielders playing shallower & more towards the lines they will have less time to cover more ground.
3) Arm strength will be less valued because the batted balls hit in front of them will get to them closer to HP & sooner than when they were playing deeper.
4) More late inning come backs in close game because there won’t be “no doubles” positioning ( Extra deep).
5) More apt to play left handed throwers in RF & RH throwers in LF to put their glove hand closer to the gap because so many more balls will be hit into the gap with corner outfielders playing closer to the lines.
6) On extra base hits middle infielders having to go out further to get throws from outfielders to prevent triples & inside the park home runs. Arm strength more a priority for middle infielders especially second basemen. Maybe the shortstop goes out for all extra base hits.
7) Depth rule adjustments for places like Coors Field or any off the larger fields.
THOUGHTS?
Division I sports includes 300+ schools. And that makes our NCAA tournaments awesome.
But, we can’t have a D1 that big if the cost is progress.
The rationale of the pushback here is equivalent to the idea that “volunteer coaches” should have been maintained in college baseball.
Men's college soccer celebrated its move to a fall-spring season. But behind the scenes, there's a strong push to block it.
~150 schools have submitted rescission votes. The NCAA D-1 board will discuss today.

@ScottStras@Hirsch_Tweets I would disagree slightly there: we’re talking about the bottom of D1 here.
Those athletes are paying for school. And for many of those schools, 25-35 students matter given the enrollment cliff we’re seeing.
An example: LaSalle dropping baseball then reinstating it 3 years later.
@ScottStras@Hirsch_Tweets Fair points and I really can’t speak to soccer.
I worry most about FB/Hoops spending being a runaway freight train.
I don’t think schools will drop sports much:
1) causes litigation
2) horrible publicity
3) hurts enrollment
BUT support for non-rev teams could plummet
@mikejohnson_2@Hirsch_Tweets I’m open-minded to all 3 options:
1) keep it as is…
2) move season back 2 weeks (your proposal here)
3) move season back 4 weeks
None of these will be perfect but all have merits.
Your idea splits the difference so maybe that’s the play.
@ScottStras@Hirsch_Tweets 1) Thanks for listening…much appreciated!
2) I would say that moving the season back still has real possibilities… I could go either way.
Question: what is your main objection to moving the college baseball season back?
Here’s the thought btw: trade FEB games for more MAY games
@bspec21 Your point about FB/Hoops spending is important. Those 2-3 sports are runaway trains right now. They could crater the whole enterprise if we’re not careful.
Lots of smart people working on that obviously.
Interesting program trajectory here!
1) This athletic dept has momentum in the Big 12.
2) 14 league wins in 2026
3) Ryder Robinson & Ezra McNaughton were two draft risks who returned… both off of excellent seasons!!
