after reading some of Kamil's old substacks (Wallerstein Constant), one must see the astounding parallels of Manchuria to Eastern (New Country) Ukraine and the Donbas.

both were parts of the Eurasian steppe finally settled around the turn of the 19th century due to the death of cavalry, then later resource/industrial heartlands for semi-peripheral industrializers that exported local commodities (appropriated from the recently placed Shandongese and Volhynian peasants respectively) to import the industrial systems from the core.

it was quite lucky of China of course that both powers were never quite able to completely overpower the other, and then suffered civilizational-scale setbacks in World War 2, such that the long process of China's national preparation for its own industrialization was realized.
