Americans still believe they live in a democracy, which is rather sweet. The president has just explained, out loud and to applause, that the only election result he will accept is the one where his side wins, and the country has responded by nodding politely and going back to arguing about the price of petrol.

In a few weeks they are going to have a crisis dropped into their laps of a size nobody has ever seen before, and they will be absolutely astonished, because apparently being told in advance doesn't count.
