That "practical skills" nonsense that we repeat is destroying our young people. My students struggle with the idea of working at something without seeing immediate results. They hop from course to course, seek immediate returns, never master one skill, especially if there are no immediate rewards. When you look at life like that, addiction is only a step away because the results of addiction are "practical." You drink, you get high. It's practical work, when you think of it.

So if you are a parent of young children reading this, wash that "practical skills" nonsense out of your mouth. Teach your child longevity. Skill improves with work over time. Children have to learn to work without immediate consumer rewards. The skill is also a material reward.

Nothing replaces the consistency of work. Nothing. If you don't believe me, follow Prof Marandi's podcast on how Iran was able to stand up to the US. The years of commitment to actual knowledge and work, not cheap accolades, comes with rewards. One of those rewards is philosophical clarity, which we Kenyans were trained by the British and the Americans to hate. And now our children are paying the price.

If you care, teach your children through work, but also through stories. Tell you child stories of experts and skilled people and their accomplishments. That means that you also must also do the work. Dust off those books you swore never to visit again, and start learning about scientists, artists, writers, architects, engineers .... people who did real work over decades. Tell those stories to your children. Stop reading motivational books and this surge of autobiographies hitting the market. Or read @jnyairo on Substack to get a good critical perspective of these autobiographies now flooding the market.

There is no shortcut to thinking. No AI app can spare you that work. And CBC has to go. It has to. The fundamental problem isn't the content. It's the political philosophy. The content is bonga points. And anyway, the mental problems reinforced by CBC have already started showing up. CBC is going to give our children mental complexes which Kenyan psychologists will not be able to resolve, given that they are also so clueless about the system. But to avoid getting there, teach your child to work, and tell them histories of those who did.
