With all this downtime on our hands, it feels like a good time to try something new.
Those who know me know I think a LOT about UGC branding and marketing within @FortniteGame. I figured I'd put some of those thoughts on paper.
For this first volume, I tackled the recently released #UEFN 2024 Roadmap. I pick out the mechanics that I think will lead to big changes in branding opportunities and marketing habits and analyze them.
If you want branding and marketing tips and/or if you are bored due to downtime, check it out:

Big shoutout to @RayBenefield for inspiring me to do this and lending his endless wisdom.
Tonight! Excited to co-host the AWS Unreal Fest (@EpicGames) Kick Off Party in Orlando! Our creator panel will spotlight wrestling star and actress @MercedesVarnado (The CEO) as she shares her unique path to success in the entertainment industry. She will be joined by Nancy Chen, Founder of Girlies Squad, a Fortnite success story, and Andrew Temkin, a UEFN brand integration specialist, as they discuss the challenges and opportunities of building fun!
Miles Dorsey, Founder of Braingum (and our unofficial @polkadot Ambassador😃) will be on site too! We can't wait for all of the surprises that will come in Orlando this week!🎮👾🤖
(WIP) Sneak-peak of what I've been working on lately. (Sound was added in the video, not in game)
I want the player to feel like they are the strongest, so I might just do it hard to use and overpowered in the first iteration.

Ray's talk mentioned here (& linked below) profoundly shaped my perspective on creative ideation and development strategy in UEFN's current state.
Viewing game development (specifically in UGC ecosystems) through the lens of toy mechanics has been immensely helpful for me, and it's been a great way of contextualizing the success of some maps.
For example, while there are multiple reasons I believe @the_sun_pirate's Finishers map has blown up, one of the key reasons is that it allows players to play with their "favorite toy" - the avatar, as Ray notes - in a way they have never been able to before.
I highly recommend watching: https://t.co/EyRc5Prk3g
@RynexGD I’d say too, the rise in popularity of RPG-adjacent genres like bossfights & rouge-likes are indicators that the player base is starting to want more immersive, story-focused worlds.
@jaythofficial@RayBenefield @garryfinkleste1 Thanks for reading man! I tried for a long time to write things how I thought someone else would and then decided that was a shite strategy. Thankful you like the tone.
It's been a minute. Let's start here:
I started writing this essay five months ago in a dingy pub in Amsterdam.
Unreal Fest '24 had just happened, I hadn't yet founded Braingum and I couldn't possibly know that I would be making this ecosystem my home in the near future. I was just a guy on his second pint with a lot of questions.
Questions like "What makes a gaming UGC genre take off?" and "Why do certain Fortnite experiences do better than others?" At the time (and still today) answers to those questions were few and far between. So I began looking for them myself.
This essay asks many questions, gives some answers, and then, annoyingly, asks a few more questions. I can't promise it's perfect, but I can promise it's worth it.
Here are some of the things it explores:
- How UGC source games impact their ecosystems
- Why certain genres take off in Fortnite when others don't
- How to architect strategically sound games for the Fortnite audience
- Why you should analyze your competition
- Why creativity and innovation matter
Here's the essay: https://t.co/2q0h8qcu6a
As always, please reach out to me with any questions, suggestions, comments, fun facts, poems, NYC restaurant recommendations, pictures of dogs, etc.
Special thanks to those who have pushed me to do more of this kind of stuff:

@immaturegamer@RayBenefield @garryfinkleste1 Thank you! And thank you for always highlighting the best of the community - it goes a long way in encouraging people to be creative and innovative.
@GrinernCreates Thank you! Yep - the UGC base game deeply impacts what players seek. I will say though - that is subject to change as the player base expands and grows. Fortnite on mobile would be a great catalyst for this.
