This weekend for PPAU National Congress 2025, I interviewed Vinay Orekondy, founder of the Australian Progressives. Our conversation touched on these topics and more with a focus on civics, democracy, voting, community building and the future of American/Australian politics

An organisation called CitizenGO claiming to speak for "tens of thousands of Australians" has been spamming candidate inboxes about anti-vax, anti-abortion, pro-religious cookery. Unfortunately their spam has given us all their names and emails. What should we do with them?
Effective algorithmic decision making will:
- Make assumptions
- Show bias towards simple solutions
- Trade off accuracy vs delay
- Take chances
These aren't concessions though, this is just being rational. We need a more rational strand of politics in Australia today #auspol
Similar story in Australia. Except I'd throw in time spent doing marking, lesson prep, assessment prep, mandatory PD, [unpaid] extracurriculars and more.
Of course all this can theoretically be automated or made redundant by AGI, but the broad scope brings increased complexity
sometimes people are like "we're going to replace all teachers with AI" and I think this is very much overestimating the percentage of time the 1.6 million kindergarten and elementary school teachers in the United States spend teaching
Whistleblower David McBride @MurdochCadell is in prison for 5 years while war crimes perpetrators roam free. #auspol system is bust. David writes an oped for MWM.

We in Fusion recently attended a Sydney meeting of the Libertarian Party, where they had Prof. Ian Plimer & others challenging #climate change. Me being the Fusion candidate for #Bennelong, I recorded a video reply: https://t.co/059snOnNO6 #auspol ;also: https://t.co/02bT1xnX1j
In San Francisco for work and was excited to see this local event opposing book bans in the US.
Free speech used to be a left wing value as the most effect way to oppose authoritarianism. Censorship such as book bans should never come to Australia #auspol#censorship
@kevinbonham@DrDreHistorian I'm glad to be quoted positively in it. Happy to take questions about which criticisms I agree with and which miss the mark :)
Pics from the debate on Saturday night. Me vs 4 climate change "skeptics" to argue for the reality of climate change in front of an unfriendly audience. Still reckon I managed to change a few minds #auspol#climatechange

@LibertariansNSW Human induced global warming is a serious and growing threat for our species to face. We can no longer ignore or pretend it's something that we won't have to deal with.
Someone contacted us re the Australian AI Safety Institute to share -- Australia committed to creating an AI Safety Institute as part of the Seoul Declaration but remains the only signatory country yet to deliver. Australia's about to elect a new govt and it's a close race. Neither major party is budgeting ANY funds to AI, and we're the only signatory to not have one. Asking for:
Open letter calling for an AISI plus mandatory guardrails. Toby Ord signed, needs 500+ signatures though. https://t.co/XXWr3dlOAf
Virtual town hall on April 9th 18:30 AEST with experts and we've invited the major political parties. https://t.co/FxfQ4Fc0po
