Valve says a “significant number” of employees are working on Steam’s growing visibility problem as the platform becomes increasingly crowded with new releases.
The company also says it won’t gatekeep games made with AI.
“We don’t want to be gatekeepers telling developers which tools they should or shouldn’t use.”
Valve wants to improve Steam’s discovery systems so good games can still stand out in an increasingly crowded store.
Yeah, if you say, "hey AI, make me a game" then it's going to be unoriginal. If you have a very specific game in mind and you describe it to the AI in great detail, then test and iterate and test and iterate and test and...
Then you're doing game design, and simply using a tool.
Valve says it's "fully aware" of the AI slop flooding Steam.
Rather than filtering developers, Valve wants to improve discovery. Next Fest shows games almost at random for the first two days, and wishlists alone don't boost your Steam visibility. People actually buying and playing your game does.
Tom Giardino highlighted the shift in scale. Just three years ago, he was going around trying to convince developers to participate, saying, "There are only 50 or 100 games, so you should definitely join," but now the number of participating titles reaches into the thousands. He described it as "the pendulum swinging to the opposite side."
"We don't think we're perfect and there's plenty of room for improvement," but added, "Rather than limiting developer access, making Steam a smarter and more dynamic platform is the starting point of our philosophy."
2 types of AI users:
"how can I use it to create something great?" (open-minded artisans)
"how can I cut even more corners and pass it off as work?" (parasitic slop cannons)
This interview with GabeN is quite interesting:
“Perhaps unsurprisingly, Newell believes that LLM tools are the next great technological leap, and are going to prove so transformative that this is where people should focus their learning.“

We believe access to capable open-source cyber models is our constitutional right as Americans under the 2nd Amendment.
It is our duty as technologists and patriots to help protect the digital infrastructure that powers the world's largest economy.
As such, we’re serving our cyber models “at-cost”, in US data centers only, with ZDR enabled by default.
We do not plan to make money serving these models.
If you run a company that is considering how to best protect against cybercrime, reach out to me or @atbeme. We’d be happy to advise.

Just because you don't like AI, doesn't make it theft.

If learning from others is theft, you may as well go back to pounding rocks together.
