🌍 World didn’t beat America. America beat the world.
🔥 New India → Just India → Leading India

What does success actually mean?
This was a question I was left wondering about after I read a small piece of conversation between Alastair Cook and Yuvraj Singh in Cook's book recently. Yeah, not two names that are found in the same sentence too often. But hear me out

With the excitement for the #IPL2024 building I’ve been looking into the data and seeing what insights it tells us. If you don’t like IPL & data I suggest you look away now for those that do buckle up as it’s a long ride.
Firstly a few of the parameters I used #WPL2024
VP Hamid Ansari used to adjourn the Rajya Sabha every day at 12:00 and go to offer namaz etc.
All the MPs used to sit idle waiting for him, constitutional work remained closed
Hamid Ansari was nominated by Congress

🧵 A look at the evolving broadcast landscape in India and all the talk around mergers / acquisitions...
It’s been a while since I shared something on the subject. Here are some general thoughts.
⬇️
Last week, a small but interesting development took place. Around 15 to 20 executives quit Star Sports (Disney India). The exits have happened at a time when the company is planning to sell off its India business and is learnt to be in advanced talks over a potential merger.
Some important names have departed, especially their VP Sales & Sales Director. Well, their advertising revenues just went down by 59%, so understandable why people are in a chaotic state of mind.
Disney continues to be in a mess. Operating losses are up by 82% (in access of $400m) last fiscal. Annual revenues from just the sports business are down by 39%... so the developments are not quite surprising.
⏺️⏺️⏺️
Then there’s this Zee-Sony merger – said to be happening since time immemorial now.
Like Shahrukh Khan’s famous – you love me, you love me not – line from a movie in the 90s, the fructification of the Zee-Sony merger keeps blowing hot and cold every week.
One week it’s happening, the other week it’s not. Of course by now we all know why it’s stuck – because the current Zee head wants to stay as CEO of the merged entity and the current Sony India head doesn’t want it to happen. Egos. Past relations. Future aspirations – a potent and heady mix of multiple things.
If you ask me what’s likely to happen – well, personally I think things have come too far for Zee and Sony to go back their separate ways. There’s too much at stake already and especially if Disney manage to find a partner in India (Viacom18, as being speculated), things won’t get any easier for Zee and Sony unless they come together.
Remember – law of the jungle always applies – strong defeats weak.
⏺️⏺️⏺️
Anyway…
Both, Zee and Sony have taken a peep into each other’s closets. They’d rather stick together now than drift. And make no mistake – both need each other. One has a streaming reach, the other has money to build on the business. One has TV advertising revenues to gain from, the other has a potentially viable digital subscriber base. A potential symbiosis.
Consolidation is the name of the game. The future is streaming and having deep pockets is one way to survive (do read up on what ESPN’s planning next where streaming is concerned).
⏺️⏺️⏺️
But that’s only part of this thread. The bigger picture is the possible destruction that these developments could leave in their trail.
Mergers mean ‘consolidation’, meaning ‘the process of unification by dissolution of existing entities’.
Consolidation also means – getting leaner. Loss of jobs.
The closer these or such mergers come to see the light of the day, more jobs will go and that's what worries me. The foot soldiers. Mid-level executives, editors, producers, cameramen, technicians, crew, Sales & marketing, other staff – get ready for a bloodbath.
The year 2024 will be a litmus test for the industry as the landscape changes. Frankly not everybody’s looking at the future from the pilot’s seat.
⏺️⏺️⏺️
So, who exactly has a finger on the future?
Well, right now – any company that saw the digital transformation as of yesterday’ is better prepared for a stronger ‘tomorrow’.
Take a look at this link that outlines who’ve been the gamechangers globally – an annual list of 10 influencers that’ll define the sports industry this year: https://t.co/COBuo7ZCH4
Viacom18 finds a mention for taking a timely call on whether Pay TV will remain economically viable in India (simply because of the reluctance of the average Indian consumer to pay for premium content) and for causing a disruption in the market that has already led to seismic changes.
The other influencers who find a mention are the likes of OpenAI chief Sam Altman, ESPN chair Jimmy Pitaro, minister of sport at Paris 2024 Amélie Oudéa-Castéra among others.
⏺️⏺️⏺️
The year will change how we’re looking at the broadcast industry. My view is – get ready to see India’s broadcast space transform into a unique digital market …. One that benefits from subscription to reach last mile, and alternately gains in the process through SEO-led advertising.
Think of a middle ground where premium prime-time advertising meets old-age, traditional FMCG pushes. There’s no telling which way things might be headed, but a change is about to engulf the space and it’s already here.
⏺️⏺️⏺️
By the way – I’m guessing people will ask about this anyway… so sharing anyway:
1. Disney’s deal with Zee for ICC media rights: Unlikely to happen if Disney merger happens with Viacom18. It’s a wait and watch. When the announcement was made, the BSE was notified – so, I don’t know how things will reverse on that front. U-19 World Cup is only going to be on Star. T20 World Cup – we’ll address this towards May end.
2. The future of ILT20 broadcast, if Zee-Sony merger doesn’t happen: Well, here’s what I think…. Regardless of whether the merger happens or not, Zee and ILT20 will part ways mutually (which means, this is the last edition of ILT20 in its current form). And at the price at which Zee had committed, no other broadcaster will come in, which will lead to other stakeholders in the league bowing out.
3. SA20: A robust domestic circuit is going to be of great help. JioCinema has the rights but equally import is SA20’s domestic broadcaster SuperSport’s presence as a stakeholder in the league. The property should continue to flourish.
