Mapping London’s most spoken languages
This map shows the incredible linguistic diversity of London. While English is the most spoken language in every borough, the second and third most spoken languages vary widely across the city.
Large immigrant communities have shaped these patterns. Polish, Turkish, Bengali, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Portuguese, Arabic, and Tamil are among the most common second languages, each concentrated in different parts of London. For example, Bengali is strong in Tower Hamlets, Punjabi in Hillingdon, and Polish across several western boroughs.
By the third most spoken tier, the picture becomes even more varied, with Spanish, French, Romanian, Nepali, Persian (Farsi) and others appearing. This reflects London’s role as a truly global city, where more than 300 languages are spoken in homes and schools.
Together, these maps highlight how communities from around the world have left their mark on the linguistic landscape of London, making it one of the most multilingual cities on Earth.
A new study by graduate students and professors in the McGill Geography Department reveals that micromobility infrastructure in Montréal - bike lanes, BIXI docks, etc.- accounts for just ~2% of street space, despite higher demand in key boroughs. https://t.co/kCgHTQU4JX
