Teachers donβt lose their spark because they stop caring. They lose it because they care too much. It's a system that keeps asking for more while giving less.
And when that spark goes out, the world becomes a little darker, colder, and lonelier. ~ Dr. Brad Johnson
We always had SEL, we just didnβt teach it in worksheets.
We lived it on the playground.
And research backs it up β kids learn empathy, resilience, and self-control through play and real interaction, not packets and prompts.
No worksheet ever taught what a game of tag or a playground argument could.
The first and easiest way to make a connection with a student who is struggling is simpleβsee them. Truly see them. Greet them by name. Notice their effort, not just their behavior. A moment of genuine acknowledgment can open the door to trust long before any lesson ever will.
Our job is to teach the students we have. Not the ones we would like to have.
Not the ones we used to have.
Those we have right now.
All of them.
