I once dated a lovely woman when we were both in our twenties. It didn’t work out, but we stayed connected on social media and remained perfectly civil.

Then, shortly before 2016, her Facebook started developing Brexit Brain.

First came the misinformation. Then the hysteria. Then the moral panics. Then the increasingly unpleasant posts about immigrants and assorted designated enemies of Britain. Eventually she started casually dropping slurs.

So I messaged her privately and said, basically: come on, you’re better than this. Stop using that language.

She responded by calling me the r-slur. Knowing full well that I worked in health and social care, spending most of my time with people with learning disabilities.

And that was that. Blocked. Haven’t spoken to her since.

I mention this because Graham Linehan has just wandered into my mentions, stroked his chin thoughtfully, and decided his contribution to the discussion should be:

“Does your name mean ‘a terrible [r-slur]’?”

And now I find myself wondering what Helen Serafinowicz makes of opening social media occasionally and discovering what targeted slur her ex-husband has deployed before teatime.

Imagine once sharing a mortgage with someone and years later seeing him in the replies doing GCSE lunch-break edgelord material to strangers because their username is French.

Life comes at you fast.
