Is the AU still relevant and fit for purpose?
Few reflections:
Reflection 1:
The 38th AU Summit convenes at a critical juncture as the world finds itself caught a dangerous interregnumbetween a declining post-World War II international order and a new paradigm that is yet to emerge. As Antonio Gramsci observed in a different context, "The crisis consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born; in this interregnum a great variety of morbid symptoms appear."
Amid deepening distrust among global powers and intensifying geopolitical rivalries, this transition period presents multiple challenges for Africa. The efficacy of AU architectures, including its peace and security frameworks— designed for a post-Cold War unipolar world order under U.S. leadership—requires reassessment. In this emerging multipolar world, the AU must undertake clear policy repositioning.
Reflection 2:
The current international and African peace and security frameworks, including the RECs, have failed to prevent genocidal wars. Thirty years after the Rwandan Genocide, global and Pan-African peace and security architectures have proven unfit for preventing genocide and atrocity crimes, as evidenced by ongoing conflicts in Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia, DRC). This is further exemplified by the failure to effectively address the Sahel coups, which led to the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States and their withdrawal from ECOWAS.
Reflection 3:
Lacking even minimal standards of international law, extra-regional powers vying for influence prioritize their interests over Africa's vital concerns, exacerbating local conflicts, undermining legitimate governance, and impeding sustainable development.
The geopolitical competition has devolved into a 'race to the bottom,' creating more volatility in international cooperation.

Reflection 4:
The interferences of extra-regional actors escalated into proxy wars has undermined the integrity of the state in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Libya, and other states such as Yemen, Ukraine.
These external powers have become so deeply involved that they constrain and overshadow domestic political and military forces while heavily backing warring parties, rather than helping them resolve their own challenges.
Reflection 5:
Extra-African actors have largely taken over regional peace initiatives that have relegated the AU and RECs to secondary roles or excluded them entirely, despite their primary mandate in conflict prevention.
This is evidenced by Turkey's mediation between Ethiopia and Somalia, and Saudi Arabia/USA's lead role in Sudan, and failure in unified Pan African approach in DRC, reflecting a concerning trend where bilateral initiatives are replacing established multilateral frameworks.
The Pact for the Future's adoption marks progress as an aspirational political declaration.
Hope it slows the global geopolitical race to the bottom by setting ground rules.
Its true value will be determined by implementation and impact.
PM Abiy Ahmed, you and your willing coalition are the accused, not the bearer of justice, transitional or otherwise. The only time transitional justice can address accountability on state-led genocidal excesses is when only the culprits speak from the defendant's box.
Dear trolls,
Criticize me. Criticize my analysis. Criticize my character. Criticize the US. Criticize the TPLF.
I don’t give a shit.
Disrespect the people of #Tigray, who have endured 2.5 years of immeasurable suffering, and you get blocked. That’s the line.
I’m going to start doing this again.
If you acknowledge that genocide has been committed against the people of Tigray please:
1. like/RT this post. I want to follow you.
2. follow the accounts that like/rt this post and please follow back.

Yes, circumstances - not choice - has made me into an "specialist in human cruelty" while also being fortunate to be No Stranger to Kindness. My thanks to @minassie2 for this Mekelle Foresight conversation on @Tigrai_TV around #Tigray#Ethiopia#Eritrea https://t.co/BDfJFvFdXa
Indep'ce isn't a fortnight project. It requires meticulous planning, otherworldly patience, & Machiavellian intrigues. We shouldn't panic whenever it isn't publicly affirmed. We ought not need reassurance everyday that its gonna happen cos it has already happened - in our hearts!
