Yesterday, @MbararaUST hosted an engagement meeting and seminar on disability inclusion at its Kihumuro Main Campus.
The seminar brought together students with disabilities from higher education institutions across Western Uganda.
The event was held under the theme "Disability Inclusion: A Collective Responsibility for All.”
Drawing from his work with MindLyfe, Kawekwa further highlighted the importance of community-based approaches in addressing mental health challenges and promoting inclusion.
“As Africans, belonging, shared responsibility, and supporting one another are at the heart of how we overcome life’s challenges. When communities stand together through listening, understanding, and offering support, we create stronger systems of care where no one feels left behind or alone in their struggle,” he added.
Mr. Douglas Kawekwa, Founder & CEO at MindLyfe was the keynote speaker at the seminar.
In his presentation, Kawekwa underscored the strong link between mental health and disability inclusion, noting that stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to well-being and help-seeking among students and communities.
“Stigma silences people, isolates them, and often makes individuals delay or completely avoid seeking the support they need, yet early support can make a significant difference in a person’s well-being, recovery, and ability to thrive in academic and social life,” he said.
Yesterday at Sauti 116, we had the privilege of hosting the team lead from Mind Lyfe, an initiative committed to helping people live better by consciously taking care of their mental health.
Mind Lyfe works to make mental health support more accessible by connecting individuals to professional therapists — including counselors, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists — through one platform. They are also building a network of mental health service providers to expand access to care.
It was a wonderful and insightful engagement, as we explored ways of strengthening support systems and improving access to mental health services for those who need them most. 🧠🤝
