Life update: last month I started a postdoc at LLNL focused on using climate model projections to inform infrastructure planning. My heart will always be with forams but I’m excited for this new opportunity!
At 8 p.m., the grid operator ended its Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) 3 with no load sheds for the night. Consumer conservation played a big part in protecting electric grid reliability. Thank you, California!
Such awful news. Sarah was always so kind to me and I’m grateful for the time we spent talking about science and life. My heart goes out to her family and friends
If this holds, this is particularly good news for graduate student research and teaching assistants throughout the state who have had to pay ~$1K/yr of their modest living stipends back to their institutions via the "SIF".
This is embarrassing to ask, but #GeologyTwitter, do you know of any free/low-cost grant-writing workshops for ECRs coming up?
Successful grant-writing wasn’t a skill I was encouraged to learn & I didn’t have the time/$$/knowledge to take an off-site crash course.
Any pointers?

Minda Monteagudo is the first Ph.D. to graduate of Georgia Tech’s ocean sciences and engineering program. She analyzed the chemistry of fossil shells in ocean sediment to reconstruct ocean temperatures across earth’s geological history. #WeCanDoThat | https://t.co/XyOC6U1ne0
Spent my Carbon Day (12/01) at the first day of RECS, hearing from @jwilceclab@GlobalCCS@WYOENERGY. So excited for the rest of the program! https://t.co/PjnbctL0vC #CCUS
Meanwhile TAs like me are fielding emails from covid positive students while still being expected to teach in-person labs (24 students, no 6 ft distancing) next week and onward while also trying to finish a dissertation during a pandemic
Notice: increasing cases @GeorgiaTech -> many *dozens* of newly reported cases and almost certainly just as many more undetected given testing rates.
Please keep in mind this weekend given absence of vaccine requirements & indoor mask requirements.
