Sakya Monastery Library; one of most incredible medieval libraries one can encounter is located inside Sakya Monastery in Shigatse, Tibet :

Sakya Monastery; a Buddhist monastery situated in Sa'gya Town, Sa'gya County, about 127km west of Shigatse, in Tibet Autonomous Region. Monastery is considered as seat of Sakya  (Sakyapa) school of Tibetan Buddhism. Sakya monastery houses many important artifacts. It was founded in 1073 AD, by  Khön Könchok Gyalpo (1034–1102 AD), a Nyingmapa monk of the powerful noble family of Tsang, who became first Sakya Trizin. The "southern monastery" was founded under orders of  Drogön Chögyal Phagpa in 1268 AD, across a river from earlier structures. Its powerful abbots governed Tibet during 13th-14th Centuries AD, under overlordship of Mongol Yuan dynasty after downfall of Tibetan Empire, until they were eclipsed by rise of new Kagyu and Gelug schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Most of southern monastery was burned down in 16th Century AD. It was only restored to its previous size in 1948.

Sakya Monastery houses a huge library of as many as 84,000 books and scrolls, most of them are Buddhist scriptures, on traditional stacks 60m (200ft) long and 10m (33ft) high. Over 40,000 volumes of scriptures and books, handwritten in Tibetan, Sanskrit, Chinese and Mongolian, most of them are Buddhist scriptures, but also tell the story of Tibet through prism of philosophy, literature, history, astronomy, mathematics, opera, poetry, medicine, agriculture, geology, art and among other disciples.

The library collection was remained untouched for hundreds of years, until it was discovered in 2003 in one of the monastery walls. One scripture weighs more than 500kg, the heaviest in the world. Some are elaborately decorated with gold letters and images of Buddhas. The two primary Buddhist texts Kangyur and Tengyur (Kanjur and Tanjur) are written in gold ink. The collection also includes many volumes of palm-leaf manuscripts, which are well-preserved due to the region's arid climate.

In 2003, library was examined by Tibetan Academy of Social Sciences, it is now known these ancient scrolls contain valuable knowledge on various subjects. The monastery started to digitize the library in 2011. As of 2022, all books have been indexed, and more than 20% have been fully digitalized. Monks now maintain a digital library for all scanned books and documents.

More than 3,000 murals in Sakya Monastery depict religious, historical and cultural themes, including valuable records of historical scenes such as Phagpa's meeting with Kublai Khan and the monastery's founding. The main library hall contains a 66m long mural showing the life of Gautama Buddha. There are also more than 1100 pieces of porcelain in the hall, dating from Yuan dynasty to early 14th Century AD.
