(She/Her) MA student at Wilfrid Laurier Criminology, studying media conceptions of serial homicide. Interested in neuroscience and forensic psychology.
It's important to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas: ghosts terrorising rich people in the middle of the night until they agree to pay their employees more.
Charlie Kirk was an unrepentant racist, transphobe, homophobe, and misogynist who often wrapped his bigotry in Bible verses because there was no other way to pretend that it was morally correct.

[THREAD] This #WomensHistoryMonth, let's not forget how many of our rights were only won in recent decades, and werenโt given by asking nicely and waiting.
We need to fight for our rights.
Here's are a few examples:
How My Student Got a Fully Funded PhD at Cambridge University: A 10-Step Research-Oriented Plan
Map the Research Landscape
Start by identifying research gaps in your field. My student began by:
โขReviewing top-tier journals (Nature, Science, etc.) and research trends in their niche.
โขAnalyzing Cambridge-affiliated labsโ recent publications to ensure alignment.
Pinpoint the Right Supervisor
A strong supervisor match is critical. My student:
โขCreated a shortlist of professors whose work aligned with their interests using the Cambridge University departmental pages.
โขStudied their recent papers, noting specific gaps or potential extensions.
Craft a Targeted Cold Email
1.A brief introductory paragraph connecting their background to the professorโs field.
2.Specific references to the professorโs work, showcasing genuine interest and prior reading.
3.A concise 2-3 sentence research pitch proposing a potential collaboration.
Build a High-Impact Research Proposal
The research proposal is often the deciding factor. My studentโs proposal:
โขHad a clear research question addressing a global or discipline-specific challenge.
โขProposed novel methodologies with practical outcomes.
โขPositioned Cambridge as the ideal hub for their research.
Design a Research-Centric CV
A CV for Cambridge needs to highlight research achievements rather than generic skills. Include:
โขPublished papers (with DOI links).
โขConference presentations and relevant research internships.
โขTechnical expertise like data analysis tools, lab techniques, or programming languages.
Write a Powerful SoP with Data
My student:
โขStarted with an urgent research question and connected it to their academic journey.
โขHighlighted skills validated by metrics (e.g., years of lab work, number of publications).
โขShowed how Cambridgeโs resources, labs, and supervisors could help achieve the research goals.
Secure Strategic Recommendations
They approached referees with specific requests:
โขReference to technical or research skills (e.g., โproficient in fluorescence microscopyโ).
โขExamples of independent problem-solving and initiative in research projects.
Leverage Cambridge-Specific Scholarships
โขGates Cambridge Scholarship: Focused on global impact.
โขCambridge Trust Scholarships: Specific to international students.
Prepare for a Research-Heavy Interview
โขReview foundational theories and methodologies in their field.
โขAnticipate questions like:
What challenges might arise in your proposed research?โ
How does your proposal align with Cambridgeโs strategic research aspirations?
Track Deadlines
Cambridge has department-specific deadlines and competitive slots. My student:
โขCreated a detailed timeline with deadlines for applications, scholarships, and document submissions.
โขActively followed up with professors and funding bodies.

PhD Students - Identifying research gap is one of the biggest challenges.
How to identify the research gap for your PhD?
Here is a stepwise process that can help you to identify gap for your PhD.
Before identifying the gap, you need to identify the area. This is quite easy. The area can either come from your previous interests or your supervisors can give it to you. For example, detecting cyber-attacks is a research area.
Once the area is identified, search for 5-10 most relevant literature reviews/secondary studies in the area. These papers have already reported a summarized view of the existing primary studies. Read these papers carefully to understand what literature already exists in the area.
While reading these 5-10 literature reviews, focus on the future research areas, open challenges, and discussion section. Identify 3-5 research directions from these literature reviews. Detecting data exfiltration attacks is a research direction.
Just to make sure that you don't end up doing something that already exists, search primary studies related to the research directions. Drop the ones where exactly similar works exist.
Make a few slides to present the remaining directions to your supervisors. From here, you should pick the direction where you and your supervisor see the most potential.
Once the direction is picked, do a literature review on the specific direction. If no paper exists at all in this direction, this could mean two things - either the topic is not worth doing research or the topic is good but too new.
This literature review process should get you the crisp gap. However, it won't come automatically. While reading each paper, note down the points that you think could be worth future research. This will become part of your discussion or future research section. For example, detecting data exfiltration attacks in real-time is a gap.
Once you have identified the research gap, check what kind of resources, data, infrastructure, etc, you need to conduct this research. Make sure that you can have access to these resources before you start working on the gap.
Anything to be added?

Domestic cats don't belong outdoors unsupervised. You likely wouldn't let your dog out to wander and terrorise local wildlife and shit in everyone's garden, so why is it ok that cats do it?
