After Jobs was forced out of Apple in the mid-1980s, he founded a new computer company called NeXT that was struggling to find a market for its expensive machines. That's when the CIA placed a major order with NeXT that effectively saved the company and bought Jobs enough time to mount a successful comeback to Apple in 1996.

"The operating system from NeXT became the operating system for modern Apple products," says Weinberger. "So the argument I would hear from people both inside that company and inside the intelligence community was the CIA effectively saved Jobs and saved Apple."
