If I may, there’s something I need to get off my chest.
As democracy remains under siege, it has been frustrating to watch how the press covers politics these days.
I am reminded by lessons that came to me during the Nixon years as a CBS News correspondent, which I’ll add here:
1. Enough with Both-sides-ism
When one side lies intentionally and repeatedly, they are no longer entitled to the benefit of the doubt. They should be held to account, right away. Do not simply repeat the narratives they spew.
2. Prioritize Live Fact-Checking
Rigorous and robust fact-checking is the best defense against misinformation, intentional lies, and deflection.
If Trump says the sky is green, the story isn’t that the sky is now green; the story is that the sky is still blue and Trump got it wrong.
3. Ask Lawmakers Hard Questions
Ask about the fundamental principles of democracy. Push them to go on the record that Biden won the 2020 election.
Ask if they support the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
This writing is not to offer any claim of knowing it all. Your correspondent has made his share of mistakes, but after more than seven decades I believe I have picked up a few useful guideposts.
Good journalism is always worth it. Our democracy depends on it.

Now, those socks are available at https://t.co/glUdiH9t5U. They're awesome. They make a great gift for anyone in your life who wears socks. And ALL of the profit from Hank's cancer socks goes to support better cancer care in impoverished communities. I love my brother so much.
"A sickness known as hate. Not a virus, not a microbe, not a germ — but a sickness nonetheless, highly contagious, deadly in its effects. Don't look for it in the Twilight Zone — look for it in a mirror. Look for it before the light goes out altogether."

I try to do one of these for teachers every year, so here we go:
Post your Amazon classroom wishlists here! I’ll help out with as many as I can, and hopefully other folks will be able to chip in too.
It’s crazy that this is how you all have to supply your classrooms.
Massively under-reported science story because there's so much going on right now but...it turns out that we might have figured out what's causing this very scary spike.
Quick thread, on how WE'VE BEEN ACCIDENTALLY GEOENGINEERING FOR DECADES...but then we stopped:
Last year, I was offered a job even after disclosing a stage IV cancer diagnosis. Highlighting the very best of workplace acceptance and culture.
But today, my husband unexpectedly had a job offer rescinded after letting the company know he may need 2 days off, a month after starting to help me recover from a possible minor surgery.
We’re both software engineers and both companies are in the healthcare space. The response he received highlights the discrimination that not only many patients face but also their caregivers.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disheartened and frustrated by their response. When faced with the choice, be company A not company B.
We’ve faced bigger hurdles and come out on top, so on we go.
In other news, if anyone is looking to hire a talented software engineer w/experience in healthcare. I know a guy 😉
Here’s a photo of us on my birthday this year. We celebrated with a hackathon building tools/apps for cancer patients. Yes, that was my actual birthday request. Things get real nerdy around here.
On Saturday, June 17, I was on a Lyft ride in Washington, D.C. that made me fear for my safety.
My driver missed numerous turns, prolonging my ride. In the midst of D.C. traffic, he almost hits a car and slams on his breaks, stopping about a foot from the car in front of him-

Ever wondered how many symptoms make up all of adult psychopathology described in the DSM-5? It’s 628!
How many do you think repeat across multiple diagnoses? If you answered 231 symptoms repeating a total of 1022 times (median 3 times per symptom, range 2-22), good job!

I love public libraries because they are built on the principle that books are so important and so necessary to human flourishing that access to them cannot depend on your income.
