A French court has convicted 23-year-old Melek M. over the attack on three Jewish students at the University of Strasbourg, where masked men beat the students after they covered up “Israel Assassin” graffiti, replaced “Israel” with “Hamas,” wrote “No to antisemitism” and put up posters demanding the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

After an argument, Melek M. sent a message to a Signal group when she noticed one of the Jewish students filming her. Four masked and hooded men arrived shortly afterward, knocked Arthur C. to the ground and repeatedly beat him. Haya S. testified that she was punched in the legs and stomach and thrown to the ground. The victims said their attackers called them “fascist Zionists” and “dirty Zionists.”

The four masked men who carried out the beating were never found. Prosecutors nevertheless argued that Melek helped instigate the violence, with the prosecutor saying an audio recording demonstrated “more of a desire to fight than to debate.” She was convicted of group violence and sentenced to four months in prison suspended, and ordered to pay €600 in damages to each of the three victims.

Despite the victims being Jewish, their pro-Israel and anti-antisemitism messages, and the reported “dirty Zionists” and “fascist Zionists” insults, prosecutors and the court did not retain antisemitism as an aggravating circumstance.

UPDATE: 🇲🇩 Moldova’s Parliament has approved a 60-day state of emergency in the energy and water sectors, following yesterday’s warning from President Maia Sandu. The measure will take effect on September 26.

The decision was approved by 54 MPs after more than five hours of debate. Authorities say the emergency will allow the state to act faster if problems emerge with energy, fuel or water supplies ahead of winter.

Under the measures, authorities will be able to rapidly purchase, store and distribute energy resources, prioritize imports, temporarily limit exports from strategic reserves and introduce measures to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours. They will also be able to mobilize pumping equipment and alternative power sources to manage water shortages affecting the Dniester and Prut basins.

The government says the goal is not to create panic, but to ensure it can intervene before supply problems directly affect households and critical infrastructure.

During the debate, PAS deputy Doina Gherman gave a blunt warning about the situation Moldova is facing. She argued that spending 24 hours debating who is responsible will not make gas cheaper, and challenged anyone who can bring cheaper gas, stop Russian drones from flying over people’s homes or stop the war to do so.

UK Police Tighten Synagogue Security

British police have tightened security around synagogues amid repeated antisemitic attacks and security threats targeting Jewish communities.

The move follows a terrorist stabbing in north London several months ago that injured two Jewish men, and a separate attack in Canada on the eve of Yom Kippur. A 45-year-old British man of Somali origin was arrested over the London attack.

Poland has detained a 17-year-old suspected of preparing a terrorist attack

The Internal Security Agency arrested Paweł G. on 18 September. Prosecutors say possible targets included a school and a mosque. He faces three charges.

Investigators say he planned to kill a group of people, discussed it with another person, meant to obtain weapons and military gear, and studied terrorist groups. The messages also mentioned ammunition, grenades and Molotov cocktails.

A search found knives, an AKM-type bayonet and Nazi and fascist material. Prosecutors say the threat was real.

He has not admitted guilt and refused to testify. The court jailed him for three months. Preparing to murder a group of people carries up to 15 years. Two other suspects were sent to juvenile court.
