Edith Macefield’s life was as intriguing as her decision to refuse the million-dollar offer. Born in Oregon in 1921, she was a polyglot, fluent in French, German, and other languages. Her adventurous spirit led her to join the military and she was sent to England. However, her service was cut short when officials discovered she was not yet 18.
In England, Macefield took on the noble task of caring for war orphans. She later returned to the United States, where she cared for her mother and worked at Washington Dental Service. Her personal life was marked by four marriages, all in Europe, and the tragic loss of her only child, a son who died at 13 from spinal meningitis.
After her refusal to sell her home, Macefield formed an unlikely friendship with Barry Martin, the construction superintendent for the new mall. Many speculated that Martin was trying to trick Macefield into moving, but he insisted that his intentions were genuine. After Macefield’s death, it was revealed that she had willed her house to Martin.
