#WalkPerspective. Here because we need safe walking, wheeling & cycling in Canadian cities. Tweets by Martyn of Kjipuktuk/Halifax, also at @minpedca.bsky.social
Canadian signalized intersections continue to be where vulnerable road user safety is traded for vehicular traffic flow benefits.
Conflicts can be prevented with new traffic signal types or changed phasing and no right on red, but are simply not.

"no immediate word whether the 48-year-old man driving the truck would face charges" after he struck and killed a 21 year old who was crossing legally at the time.
And we may not hear any update on this again.

top contributing factors impacting pedestrian safety = driver distraction, driver failing to yield right of way.
But @rcmpbc are resolutely focused on pedestrian behaviour and clothing

ready for next level victim blaming? Remember the "car" turned into you because you were wearing universally-worn dark clothing. And if struck on the sidewalk, maybe you weren't far enough from the road

A 35 year old suffered life altering injuries including a fractured skull after a vehicle smashed into a bus stop. Recent ICBC changes have stripped victims’ rights so she has lost her right to seek fair compensation. The NDP must stop taking advantage of injured British Columbians and restore their right to justice in the face of tragedy. #BCpoli

Part of the compensation problem is the language ICBC, media, police, and elected officials use to describe these incidents. Drivers have agency.
"how we make decisions come down to reporting, reports to 311, messages to our offices....if it’s not elevated in the right way, it’s hard for us to act on it" - Councillor Penner.
Unacceptable to offload responsibility for safe infra. to residents

This is extremely disturbing; it’s the third time a pedestrian in Scarborough has been hit by a driver this week. The other two were killed & one case was a hit & run. In 2022, right around the time a high school friend’s younger sister was killed by a driver, a report found…
Four highway wide lanes, no actual pedestrian infrastructure.
This is how pedestrians die in Canada - because decision-makers and engineers support it.

Particularly apt that the cars are struck in congestion caused by cars - and the cyclist shown looks to be a youth.
Right wing extremists would prefer that child to cycle in traffic instead and suffer with them.
Drivers detest cyclists because we can move past them easily in cities.
This hateful smirking poke at cyclists sums up how and why so much right wing political mileage can be gained from a non-issue.

The Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act has received Royal Assent! 🚗💨 This bill will:
🦺 Speed up construction of highways like Highway 413 & the Bradford Bypass
🚦 Tackle gridlock by removing poorly planned bike lanes
🥶 Freeze drive test fees
🛣️ Improve towing services and boost road safety
A better commute for tomorrow starts today!
If he really cared about access by emergency services, he would propose a law requiring dedicated lanes for buses, cyclists and emergency vehicles only, along every city arterial
A well-crafted question here from @lanesharrison.
"How do you explain the amendment that protects the province from lawsuits around injuries or deaths after you remove bike lanes to the families of those dead cyclists?"
