A bitcoin prize was encrypted into human DNA

DNA, the building blocks and foundational structure of life itself, can store computer data by translating information into sequences of its four chemical letters.

In January of 2015, geneticist Nick Goldman distributed tubes of synthetic DNA at Davos. The encoded files included the private key to 1 bitcoin.

Participants had three years to sequence the DNA and recover it. Belgian doctoral student Sander Wuyts solved the challenge shortly before the January 2018 deadline.

His first attempts failed because of an erroneous line in his decoding program, but removing it produced the files and the spendable key.

This website in June of 2010 gave away five bitcoin at a time for free. Yes, completely for free.

The developer stocked it with 1,100 bitcoin and the initial limit was five bitcoin per IP address. They wanted the website to be simple way to learn about bitcoin.

One visitor collected five bitcoin, felt bad, and donated fifty. Another used Tor to collect fifty in minutes, then returned them and explained how he had done it.

Two days after opening, the faucet held 1,570 bitcoin. People were donating faster than it was giving the coins away.

There was a time in history when you couldn’t even give away bitcoins for free because people thought they had no value.

I have severe stage fright. I’m not a content creator and I’m not trying to become one.

I made this video, asked for honest feedback in discord and got told I need a webcam, more practice, a better setup. All fair. I still took it hard, and had tears down my face. Not because the notes were wrong. Because I already knew all of it. I know I’m awkward on camera. I know it isn’t polished. I know someone will ask if I was being held hostage.

Here’s where I land though. I’m a trader first. The minute content becomes the priority, trading gets squeezed, and that’s the one thing I won’t give up. If it takes hours of takes and gear for me to look good talking, it’s not worth it to me.

So I almost didn’t post this. Then I thought about it and figured that’s exactly why I should.

Awkward and all, here it is.

I’m sure I’ll have harsh criticism and memes of me, but putting yourself out there is one of the hardest things people do.
