I routinely hug my patients. The Nehiyô medical system is based in love, sahkitowin ❤️ In western medicine that may be “unprofessional” or crossing a boundary. In Nehiyawewin this is not a pastahowin (crossing a boundary), but part of being human with another human in need.

Today has been a really rough reminder that as a Black Woman, we experience medical training so differently. And the worst part is it’s very indirect and subtle. It’s not an explicit difference most of the time, but it’s palpable.
