A $750B industry running in the dark.
The ocean underpins global trade, energy, defence. All of it depends on hydrographic data —
the precise measurement of what lies beneath the surface.
Yet, most of that data is incomplete, outdated, or simply missing.
For centuries, the ocean resisted observation.
Today, automation can change the rules.
At UDT 2026 last April, the Royal Navy reported the results of a direct test they had run: one section mapped by a crewed vessel, the other by autonomous platforms.
The autonomous systems delivered IHO Order 1 data – the highest certification available – on time, straight into charts. They could not believe it and ran the test again. Same results.
Lower cost. Continuous operation. No crew at risk.
The gap between what we know about the ocean and what it demands of us is finally closing.

When systems operate at sea, the challenge isn’t just making technology act - it’s enabling assets to coordinate, adapt, and remain effective as objectives evolve.
Last night at the AI Robotics Meetup in Milano, our co-founder Luca Mascaro shared how we orchestrate autonomous and semi-autonomous systems in complex environments: different assets, partial information, human authority, and operational intent all working together.

Earlier this month, Saronic's Corsair — an unmanned U.S. Navy vessel — reached two American soldiers off Oman.
An undisputed advantage of physical AI: when conditions are dangerous, you send the machine to do the heroic act.
But look closer. The drone followed a route. A mission outlined by others.
Now change the question. What if it had to choose between rescuing an American and an Iranian soldier?
It's a hypothetical, but the problem behind it is not: deciding under uncertainty, with no operator and no time to ask, is the actual frontier of trusted autonomy.

In the US, defence startups are winning contracts.
In Italy, they are still filing balance sheets.
When procurement is built around established primes, it filters out exactly the companies that defence now needs most.
Europe is finally correcting course.
In March, the @EU_Commission introduced AGILE: a €115M programme aimed at funding individual startups, with a streamlined process designed
deliver funding decisions within 4 months of application.
The scheme can cover up to 100% of project costs and is focused on sectors such as AI, quantum technologies,
drones, and unmanned systems.
Italy has no equivalent. Not yet.
The next generation of sovereign defence technology will either be built here or bought back at a premium.
This is not a decision Italy can afford to defer.
In recent weeks, the Strait of Hormuz has made headlines for one reason above all others: the economic shock.
Now the human cost is impossible to ignore.
While announcing Project Freedom, Trump cut through the noise: ships in the Strait are running out of food. Basic sanitation for large crews at risk.
This is what maritime operations look like when they depend entirely on human presence in environments too dangerous to sustain.
The question now is whether humans must bear the full weight of it, or whether we build systems that reduce the exposure.
Decreasing human presence in high-risk maritime environments is not only a technological ambition.
At this moment, it's about human safety.

Autonomy at sea is already in the water.
Our first autonomous system is operational since January and successfully completed the initial round of sea trials.
It’s built around mission autonomy, receiving a target, planning and executing the operation, navigating complex environments, and avoiding obstacles. All without a crew on board and unsupervised.
This milestone marks a concrete step forward in our strategy to scale autonomous maritime capabilities and mission intelligence.

The ocean is not remote. It is under-instrumented.
That distinction matters.
Because when we describe the sea as distant, hostile or hard to reach, we risk treating its opacity as inevitable.
It is not.
What we are really looking at is an environment that has not yet been equipped with the level of sensing, intelligence and operational infrastructure that its importance demands.
The challenge is not that the sea matters less.
It is that we have built less visibility into one of the environments that matters most.

Last month, the @EU_Commission published its first-ever Industrial Maritime Strategy.
It calls for:
✔️ joint procurement of maritime drones
✔️ more investment in maritime domain awareness
✔️ regulatory reform for autonomous ships
✔️ stronger protection for submarine cables
The signal is clear: Europe does not yet have persistent operational control of its own waters.
80% of EU external trade moves by sea. Critical subsea infrastructure remains exposed. The need is now defined.
