One of my lovely year 9 boys has won the english award at school. He had a rocky year 8 after the unexpected death of his dad. I literally couldn’t be prouder🥲
Any recommendations for teaching Journeys end. I’m struggling with finding ways to engage the class with the text ( I teach a top set and a bottom set) @MrTs_NQTs
@ScottPughsley Maintaining expectations with the classroom. Underlining a date and title is a simplistic quick task which enables students to keep work neat and tidy, encourage them to take pride in their work? Sweat the small stuff…
To me. I was so immensely proud of this child who had overcome her obstacle and read aloud to her English teacher. For me that’s what makes my job so immensely worthwhile.
So on Friday I have library sessions with my very lovely year 7 class, where we all read ( including me) for an hour. I usually, in this time , ask students to read to me out loud, but today something so amazing happened. I have a selective mute child in my class
(Who is very able) but due to being mute her reading age is starting to slip in comparison to her peers. I bet gently asked if she wanted to read to me today very quietly and she nodded her head - we also communicate via whiteboard. She sat in the corner of the library and read
I wish they would change the English language exam entirely to reflect the concepts studied at A Level and Degree level. Ultimately this would increase attainment at A level and boost interest in language in general. My KS4 classes find it so dull in comparison to Lit 🫡
I wish AQA would change their P1 Q5 wording. No matter how many times I tell them, every year, there are still students who literally write a description. I don't blame them: make it clear! Don't even get me started on P2....
Anyone fancy an early copy of ‘Ready to Teach: A Christmas Carol’? Give this a RT and someone will be chosen at random on Thursday! Merry Christmas, everyone! 🎅🏼 #shamelessplug@teachals @JohnCattEd
If anyone even questions the fact that ‘standard English’ is NOT a social construct please refer to Rob Drummond 2018. I think that will clear up any issues x
For over 50 years, linguists have repeatedly demonstrated how standard English is not, in Ofsted's terms, 'accurate grammar' or 'grammatically correct language', but an ideological and colonial construct which is based on the language practices of the white, middle-classes.

The nicest thing happened to me today, i was teaching my library lesson with year 7 and the librarian came over and said ‘I would never have thought you were an ECT, your control and the way you are with the kids is impeccable, I thought you had been doing it for years’🤭
